Should I be working on my other story? Probably. Is it my fault that this story popped in my head? (Kinda but I'm going to say no…) anyway, I thought that someone needed to make the cliché what-if-they-were-in-high-school story so…yeah. Enjoy!
"It's a bad idea," Mozzie said. Neal threw his friend an annoyed look.
"How is it a bad idea?"
"Well, let's see, you want to humiliate your current girlfriend's ex-boyfriend who she still probably has feelings for. How does that even sound like a good idea?"
"But Kate has nothing to do with this," Neal answered a little too quickly. Mozzie smirked. "Besides, I'm only doing this because the baseball team captain—"
"I'm sure that's what her ex-boyfriend will think," Mozzie interrupted, ignoring Neal's glare. "He probably won't trust you anyways…"
Neal looked alarmed. "Why? He doesn't even know me."
"Yet you're willing to sabotage him…" Moz shook his head in mock-sadness, "and Neal, everyone knows you. Also, besides the fact that you stole his girlfriend from him—"
"—which I didn't."
"His uncle arrested you last weekend," Mozzie finished.
"Huh."
"Yeah."
They sat in silence for a moment, watching the organized chaos swirl around them.
"At least it wasn't for anything major," Neal said brightly.
Mozzie gave Neal an incredulous look. "You were caught breaking and entering."
"You see? That implies that I actually broke something, which I didn't, I was just going to the bakery and the door happened to be locked. I was fixing it. Besides it's not like that was the worst thing we've ever done."
"Leave me out of this. Face it, Neal. You were caught," Mozzie said. "It doesn't matter what for. Peter will still not trust you."
"We'll see," Neal grinned as Peter and his baseball buddies entered the cafeteria. Mozzie groaned.
"Really, Neal? Now? You're going to become best buds with him now?" Mozzie asked.
"Correction: I don't have to become best buds with him. I just have to lour him to Alex's party."
Mozzie stared at Neal. "That's your master plan? Make him go to Alex's party? What are you going to do? Make him dance to death?"
Neal glared at Mozzie as his friend erupted into giggles. "No, that's not my master plan. I would do something more…" Neal made a vague hand gesture. Mozzie nodded knowingly. "But Alex said that she has some glue, feathers, and a camera."
"How…cliché," Moz concluded. Neal nodded in agreement. Moz paused before going on. "She does realize that honey, while wasteful of sweetness, is actually more effective than glue, right?"
Neal's fork paused mid-air as he considered his friend. "I'm not going to ask why you know that."
Mozzie frowned. "You mean, you've never had to lecture your neighbors about what happens when you put roman candles in an air tight box with one cup of flour?"
"I have no idea what that has to do with anything, but no," Neal answered.
"Huh."
There was a brief silence.
"I'm just going to continue now…"
"That might be for the best."
Neal cleared his throat. "Like I was saying, not Alex's best plan, but if it'll finally make her get over how Reese said he wouldn't go out with her…"
"Hold on," Mozzie said, holding up a hand. "If Reese was the one who said 'no' why exactly does Peter have to suffer?"
"No idea. He is Reese's friend."
"So?"
Neal's all-knowing façade began to crumble. "Well, really, it's to…I have no idea."
"Some weird girl logic," Mozzie supplied helpfully.
Neal shrugged.
"Why doesn't she just make sure that the baseball team always loses? That should tick off Reese. He is the baseball captain after all."
"Ask her." Mozzie looked up to see Alex striding towards their table.
"So, Neal. Are you ready to make a new friend?" Alex asked in a way of greeting.
"Nice to see you to, Alex," Neal answered sweetly. "Remind me again why you can't be buddy buddy with Peter?"
Alex paused for the briefest moment. "Reese would suspect something."
"Uh huh…" Neal said unbelievingly. "Anyway, Moz here has a great alternative where Reese will suffer and someone who wasn't involved won't."
"Like you care what happens to your girlfriend's ex-boyfriend," Alex scoffed. She turned her gaze to Moz. "What's your marvelous plan that Neal seems so excited about?"
"Make sure the opposing baseball team always has the advantage," Mozzie said with a nonchalant shrug, much to Neal's amusement. "Tell them our team's plays, put something in our team's water, steal equipment, bride people…really the possibilities are endless."
"Sure and make him feel like a moron for a minute," Alex sneered, "but I want Reese to know what it feels like to be alone."
Neal resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Mozzie didn't. "Alex, don't be so melodramatic," Mozzie said unsympathetically, still a bit offended by Alex's earlier reaction to his idea. "Reese did not turn you into a loner. You do still have friends."
"Ugh. Boys!" Aex threw up her hands in disgust. "He broke my heart and you don't even care!"
"Didn't you just meet him last week in your mechanics class?" Neal asked innocently, not able to hide a smirk at Alex's livid expression.
"Kate thinks it's a great idea."
"She's biased," Mozzie muttered.
"Besides, Neal," Alex said. "Do you really want to break your promise?" She gave him a doe-eyed look. "What will Kate think?"
"Uh…" Neal shifted uncomfortably.
"Thanks!" Alex squealed as she wrapped her arms around Neal. "Well, I've got to eat. Bye!" Alex waved as she ran off to the lunch line.
"That was weak," Mozzie said unnecessarily, waiting until Alex was out of hearing distance. Neal groaned.
"She did that…that look again," Neal tried to explain.
Mozzie considered. "That was still weak."
"I know."
They both sat at there lunch table in a thoughtful silence.
"Well," Neal rubbed his hands as he got up from the table, "might as well get this over with."
"Have fun!" Mozzie called.
Neal ignored him.
~O~
Peter Burke plopped his tray down at his usual table, idly listening to his friends talk about last night's game, which they won for once.
"That was an awesome pitch, Mitch!" Dan said excitedly.
"Which one?" Mitch asked jokingly. Mitch was their pitcher, so, unfortunately, he had the nickname 'Mitcher the Pitcher.' Very uncreative in Peter's opinion. Mitch seemed to like it for some reason…although Peter would personally be annoyed if anyone gave him a rhyming nickname.
"And did you see that babe who was all over Reese? She was fineeee," Henry said in a good imitation of a gangster-wannabe.
"Yeah, that's that Alex girl wasn't it?" Peter asked.
"That was Alex," Reese confirmed uncomfortably.
Peter looked curiously at Reese. "What did she want?"
"Uh…she wanted…to go out sometime." Hoots erupted from the baseball players as they waited for their captain to continue.
"And…?" Mitch finally prompted.
"I said no," Reese said awkwardly as a moan swept through the table.
"Oh hell no! That is whack!" Dan yelled. Everyone at the table looked at him.
"What was that?" Mitch finally asked.
Dan looked sheepish. "Sorry, I just saw Not Another Teen Movie."
"Token Black Guy?" Henry asked knowingly. Dan nodded.
"Yeah, that movie was awesome," said Dan.
Mitch shook his head despairingly. "Are you serious? That was probably the worse excuse for a movie I've ever seen!"
"Haven't you seen the Notebook?" Dan asked innocently.
Mitch's face turned an interesting shade of red.
"So why did you say no?" Peter asked Reese softly, ignoring Mitch's sputtering excuses.
"I don't know…I just don't think it would've worked out." Peter made a noncommittal noise. "She just more of a…handful compared to my other girlfriends." Reese tried vainly to explain. Reese watched as Peter nodded thoughtfully. "What?"
"That just has to be…the stupidest reason I've ever heard of not going out with somebody. 'More of a handful'…really? What's that supposed to even mean?"
"She's just more of the bad girl type, Peter," Reese spat. "More like a Kate." Peter stiffened at the mention of his ex. "And I, for one, don't want to make that type of mistake."
The two seniors glared at each other for a moment before Reese's gaze shifted uncomfortably away.
"I'm sorry, Peter. I didn't mean it," he apologized.
"Its fine," Peter waved it off. "Wasn't your fault anyway." He glared passed Reese's shoulder to stare at Kate's newest victim, and no, he did not mean boyfriend, Neal Caffrey. What was so appealing about him, Peter wondered. All the girls are always going on and on about his gorgeous blue eyes, hair, face, various other body parts...Peter blanched. No, not that body part! That's not what I meant…he briefly wondered who he was trying to convince. He shook his head, time to get back on track. Kate probably fell for Neal's 'bad boy' image. He did get arrested last week. Except Kate was dating him then…hmm…Peter would try to work on his theory later.
"Trying to burn a hole through his head?" Reese asked lightly, glancing over his shoulder. Peter shrugged.
"Just a bit peeved, I suppose," Peter said.
"That's an understatement," Reese muttered.
"She ditched me for him!" Peter snapped, instantly grabbing all his other friends' attention. "What do you expect me to say?"
"Talking about Kate?" Dan asked. Mitch just looked at him before slapping him on the back of the head. "Damn! What was that for?"
"If you weren't an idiot, I'd explain it to you," Mitch retorted.
"Speaking of Kate," Henry said, interrupting the potential argument. "Here comes Neal." Peter glared as Neal sauntered purposefully towards their table.
"What does he want?" Peter asked heatedly.
"We'll find out soon enough," Reese answered.
And close. So did I totally get the whole high school scenario wrong or was it ok? I didn't really want to do the classic 'someone new moves into town' so yeah…OH! And FYI—the Not Another Teen Movie reference was for my sister. I hope you enjoyed it.
