A/n : This is only my second Gilmore girls fic. I'm not sure about it. Please let me know what ya think.

Summary: Rory's thoughts on Jess. Takes place in the second season.

One, two, three I'm falling for him

His eyes were dark. Darker than his hair. They studied everyone and everything with a judgmental glint. She could read each and every thought all through the action of his eyes. And then they would land on her and she would be stumped. His irises were unreadable and then just as quickly as his eyes had landed on her they would look away and she would find herself missing the familiarity of his stare.

Her mother poked her arm

"Hey" Rory cried indignantly

Her mother gave a cheeky grin.

"You going to drink that Coffee or let it just sit there and grow weaker by the second"

Rory sighed and pushed the red mug towards her coffee obsessed mother.

Lorelai placed her hand on her chest "I'm touched" she exclaimed just before she took a gulp.

Her eyes were closed in ecstasy and Rory decided it was worth the sacrifice, just for the peace. Though her taste buds begged to differ, they were screaming for the coffee.

Rory stared down at hands silently.

She wondered why Jess was in her thoughts so.

She had written a list last night and had nailed it down to the last three things.

Number 1 was mystery.

While Jess was nuisance to Taylor and more than likely 80 percent of the adults in Stars Hollow. He was a mystery to her. He had a fairly impressive knowledge of books and she knew he was intelligent. So why did he act the way he did? Why did he set out to fail in school, when he could just as easily be at the top of the class?

Why did he insist on pestering Dean the way he did? And then in the moment when he could have beaten him to a pulp, he had walked away?

Number 2 was empathy.

She could definitely empathize with him. She knew what it was like having a parent not in action. Except Jess had two. And Rory could only imagine that would be ten times worse.

He was angry and disruptive, That's what Lane had overheard the teachers in school say.

But she could see through that, it was a cover up. He was hurt. He was alone.

And sometimes she could almost swear his eyes were trying to share something with her.

And lastly.

Rory heaved a big sigh

Was the one she didn't like to think too much about

"Hey planning to grow another finger there"?

Rory's head shot up.

Lorelai laughed, "You were a million miles away "

Rory shrugged.

"And I bet I've know where it's been and his name rhymes with Keen"

Rory gave half a smile "You know me so well"

Lorelai held her hand out for Rory's uneaten cherry Danish "Of course I do, I was the woman her birthed you"

"Oh boy and in public"

Lorelai grinned cheekily "Hand over the Danish and I won't fill you in on the gory details till your next birthday"

Rory handed the Danish over

"Ha" cried Lorelai triumphantly.

Rory, this time hesitantly turned her attention to the window.

And there his eyes locked with hers.

And she gasped and resisted the urge to bang her head on the table right then and there.

Jess smirked and Rory knew he had read her eyes, just like she had read his many times before.

Rory groaned

I'm falling for Jess
