All That's Left

Disclaimer: Nada.

It's only after James says to him "It's not much, but it's all I could do," Does Sirius know that it's really over. It wasn't over when they stopped touching, stopped smiling, started fighting the Dark Lord or ever when James married Lily. No, now it's really over.

A pregnant Lily is asleep on the couch that the two sit across from. The small lump in her stomach tells a story of a small boy, destined to look like his father, destined to be great. Sirius has never seen James look quite so proud.

It's not much, the offering. But it's all they have, the two are probably going into hiding soon, and Sirius will run if he knows what's good for him. But knowing and acting upon are still two separate things. The war is raging on around them, the best friends have not spoken in months, and though their last night together had disappeared with a fight, they are as close now as they ever were.

"I'm sorry I can't offer you the love we once had" He tells Sirius, "Was it really love anyway?" it's a question Sirius has found himself asking many times, did they really love each other? Or was it a simple release, easy, comforting, and convenient. It made them forget, if only for a while, the war that raged imminently around them, the full moons as their best friend contorted in pain, the horror of losing so many.

"It's the only thing I have to give you" James whispers once more, "Please, Sirius, I know it's hard." They swallow identical lumps in their throats, "Please be Harry's Godfather?"
