Greenhorn on the Northwestern

I've been a greenhorn on the Northwestern

Let me tell you, it's not as easy as it seems!

I've had a meltdown and a breakdown,

And one time I fell facedown

On the deck

When a wave came in.

And I've been a greenhorn on the Northwestern

And if Hell froze over, I know where it'd be!

And it's not the Gobi Dessert or Iceland in the winter,

Hell is where I work

In the awful Bering Sea!

What made me be a greenhorn on the Northwestern?

Mama, if you love me, TAKE ME HOME!

Send them a replacement,

Get my bro out of the basement,

Just take me home,

PLEASE take me home!

I wish I weren't a greenhorn on the Northwestern

My poor old spine ain't all it used to be!

Working every hour with a deck boss that is sour,

You'd think we're made of metal

The way we're working

On the Sea!

I am a greenhorn on the Northwestern

It ain't a pretty sight when grown men cry!

There was no trace of crab in the pots we tried to grab

Just a bunch of snails

And a couple of fisheyes!

I've survived being a greenhorn on the Northwestern

My beard is frozen solid and my fingers, they won't bend!

And all I got's to show for all the hours spent offshore

Is a couple grand

That I'll soon spend!

I ain't never going back to the Northwestern

My face is still raw from all the ocean spray!

But I do need the cash now

To buy that awesome two-ton snow plough,

Hey, maybe I'll come back

To the Bering Sea someday!
