Happy New Year

Author's Note: Just a sweet little story fitting the day! Happy New Year to all of you:-D

"Is it time?"

"Hm, I'm not sure. I guess not. The fireworks haven't started yet, after all."

"What time is it, then?"

Axel pushed back his sleeve a little. Strained, he tried recognize the hands of his watch, but failed. "I can't see it. It's too dark up here."

"Hm…" Roxas let his glance wander across the roofs of the dark city. The stars in the sky were shining faintly upon them.

After a while, Axel leaned back. "You know, this is the first time you and I spend New Year's Eve together", he said and looked up at the stars.

"Hmh." Roxas pulled his legs close to his body and let his chin rest on his knees. "You know, actually I've been hating January 1st my entire life."

Axel threw a questioning glance at the blonde boy. "Really? Why is that?"

"It's always been a strange feeling, waking up on January 1st", Roxas explained. "It's the first day of an entire new year, and you are all at the beginning of it. That always made me sad. You know there are 364 days ahead of you, but you can't know a single thing of everything that's going to happen during that year. You can't even be sure that you're still the same person the next time you celebrate New Year's Eve. That's what always made me so sad. On January 1st you are like a person that's standing on the edge of a deep and dark gap. I've always hated that."

"Hm…" Axel sat up again. "Actually, I've never thought of it that way…"

And suddenly there was a bang and a glittering light filled the sky. A warm glow illuminated Roxas' and Axel's faces. And seconds later millions of other fireworks followed, they lit up the black night with thousands of glittering and shining colors.

A faint smile touched Roxas' face. "Maybe I won't hate January 1st this year." And while he watched the fireworks with a content feeling warming his heart, he could feel Axel's arm around his shoulder.

"Happy New Year, Roxas."

Roxas leaned his head against Axel's shoulder and smiled. "Happy New Year."
