Rinoa paced back and forth in the locked office. This was thre forth time in two days that he had done this to her. The fourth time she was ushered out of sight and hidden away. Like she wasn't even his daughter. Like she wasn't even human.
A caged animal. That's all she was. And the worst thing was he considered her a TAME caged animal.
"Be a good girl Rinoa. Sit here Rinoa. Stay out of the officials' way Rinoa. Good girl. What am I? A daughter or a dog?"
She sat down on the desk in a huff and leaned back.
"And it isn't enough to lock me in here, noooo. He had to put bars on the windows too. That way I'm REALLY in a cage."
She blew her bangs out of her eyes and scanned the room.
~So what to do...~ She hopped up and walked in a circle around the edges of a room, thinking over and over. She ran her hand along the wall.
~Run away? Nah, last time lackeys caught me before I even got past the Presidential Residence... Make a general pest of myself? What good would that do?~
She stopped at the door and touched the knob. She studied it.
~Man, its really getting old.~
She grabbed a book off the floor and slammed it down hard on the knob. The knob broke off completely, and she let the pieces fall to the floor.
"If he's only make those litle repairs like I always told him too..."
She stuck her hand in the hole and pulled the door open, then walked out into the hall. She stopped before the beginning of the staircase.
Slowly she peered her head around.
~No one. Good. Makes this easier.~
She tip-toed past and went to her room. Her backpack sat packed in a corner, like always. She looked for a moment at it.
"Is it time?" She whispered. "I'm 15 now. I can take care of myself..."
She picked it up slowly.
"But who's to say that out there is better than in here? Who knows if the world out there isn't as disciplined and strict as it is in this house." She stopped and just stared at her bag.
"But how am I to know what its like if I never experience it? If I stay locked in here forever."
She pulled it on and walked to her dresser. She took the baseball hat off of it and placed it on her head, then put the mirrored sunglasses on.
"But am I ready to do this? To go this far? And where can I go?"
She walked to her toy safe on her bedside table and opened it, removing the gil that remained inside.
"Mom once had relatives in Timber. An Uncle who founded a resistance group, the Forest Owls. Would he take in a niece her never met?"
She stopped at a small religious icon of Hyne and picked it up.
"Hyne send me a sign. Am I doing the right thing? Should I stay here caged forever? Or leap and try to fly free?"
She stuffed it in her bag and looked around the room, seeing if she had forgotten anything.
"My weapon and necklace!"
She grabbed stuffed her weapon in her bag and pulled the necklace that once belonged to her mother on her neck. She stopped at the door as she walked out.
"Time for a leap of faith. To jump over the moon."
She turned out the lights and headed back to the office and the hidden passage that would lead her to freedom.
