Missions. That was the main thing Zack had to force himself to focus on. He couldn't bother to be interrupted… and he couldn't have distractions swarming his every thought. If he were to be one of the greatest SOLDIERs ever known, Zack would have to be single-minded.

It was more than difficult to do so. Zack found himself enveloped in other thoughts quite frequently. They were like wounds that never heal. They fester, and they re-open at the slightest bit of attention.

He couldn't afford this, and no matter what he tried to do, Zack knew those particular thoughts wouldn't leave him alone until he confronted them head on. Maybe not even then.

The chances of ruining his career were the consequences, and the feelings of others as well. Zack felt the unhealthy sting of need in the pit of his belly. It wasn't like he could just… stop.

In the midst of training, Zack bolted from the training room, and left the group of Infantrymen to their selves. He ran and ran, adrenaline pumping through his veins thanks to the Mako infusions he'd taken that morning. It fueled him, made him run faster than he would have been able to years before.

Thirteen… Since he was thirteen, Zack had been alone. Granted, when he joined the ShinRa Infantry, Zack gained a few close friends. None closer than the other though. He was always afraid that he would lose those friends somewhere along the way. Some he did… and it hurt him to think that there would be more loss.

He'd trained so hard to be what he was now, a First Class SOLDIER and a mentor to many Infantryman. He even had his very own fan club. Could he afford to lose that? No.

Zack was willing to risk it though. All for something he wasn't sure he could have, no matter how much he wanted it. The possibility… it was so slender.

He lifted his eyes to the sky, taking in a deeper breath than the previous. 'Boy oh boy.' Zack said to himself, once more looking straight ahead.

'What have I gotten myself into?'

NOTE: this was kind of like a pointless little idea I had in my mind that needed to be written, whether it was a couple sentences or… well, what you just read. Basically, if you read between the lines, Zack is struggling with his relationship with Cloud. I just didn't feel like writing that much.
