Car Tension
Please review; this is different from my other fics and I want to know what people think of it.
The utter silence in the car was magnified by the threatening circumstances overwhelming its occupants, the tension ripping at their minds and hearts. Neither the man nor the woman looked at the other, keeping their eyes on the road or out the window, driving at the exact speed limit in order to avoid being pulled over once more, although tempted to drive faster. Yet unbeknownst to the woman, the man was hiding a terrible secret from her and the rest of the world, one that she'd never have guessed in her wildest dreams, and was thinking far different thoughts then she presumed he was.
Teri Bauer couldn't believe that this was happening to her. This was the sort of thing you saw on television, in a fast-paced drama that kept you on the edge of your seats but always got resolved. The woman's words kept echoing throughout her head, seeming to taunt her ability as a mother.
A girl was hit by a car…She didn't look good.
As she felt tears sliding noiselessly down her face, she couldn't help but hope that it was Janet who had been hit. Kim would have called 911 and ridden in the ambulance with her. She knew it was a terrible thing to think, but it was a parent's instinct.
But what if Kim and Janet got separated? If it is Janet in the hospital, then Kim is still out there… No. Why would they split up? That doesn't even make sense. Of course they're together.
What if… Kim got hit? What if she doesn't survive? Oh my god, please, please, please, let my Kimmy be okay. Please, God, if you're listening, let Kim be okay.
Teri silently started to pray for her daughter's safety, occasionally wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her jacket.
Kevin Carroll stared stone-faced at the road, hoping that those two boys- Dick and Randy or something like that- didn't screw up and let Kim get hit. That would destroy the entire operation, which had been planned for over two years. He'd told Ira that he shouldn't rely on two college kids to do his dirty work, but Gaines seemed to think that they could do the job.
What would he do if the girls had somehow escaped and Kim was injured, but they were still together and Janet was at the hospital? She would obviously know immediately if an imposter father tried to take her home.
If they hadn't messed up, then that meant Janet was at St. Mark's without Kim. That was probably the best he could hope for. If not, then he'd just have to play it by ear.
Although it was only a short ten minute ride, it seemed like hours before they finally arrived at St. Mark's Medical Center, swerved to a stop, and ran inside, shouting frantically for an injured teenage girl…
