"Thanks, mom."

She hears it over and over again through the rest of her shift. When she grabs a patient's chart. When she washes her hands. When she forces a pained smile at the latest in a long line of a patients horrible jokes.

She pokes her head into the room where she stowed him away at thirty minute intervals, some instinct prompting her to make sure that he is still tucked safely and soundly into bed. Each time, his features are more relaxed than she has seen them in weeks, but there are still deep shadows beneath his closed eyes, and his skin is nearly translucent in its unusually livid state.

He sleeps heavily under the influence of the sedative, but she knows that it is not enough. She wants so badly to do more for him, but while modern medicine can cure many human ills, it is not magic. It is limited.

And she has no way to reach beyond those limits. It makes her feel powerless.

It makes her chest hurt.

Then, of course, there is the growing fear that the symptoms Ben has been showing could be leading to something far worse than just anxiety and insomnia. Every once in a while, she thinks about telling his father, and she gets a tight, panicky feeling. She never has this problem when she talks to other patients. The only ones who can make her feel this way are her boys.

And he is hers - has been since the day tom brought him back all those years ago - but it isn't really something that they talk about, or even acknowledge. Except that apparently, when he is heavily sedated, it is.

"Thanks, mom."

She hears it for the hundredth time as she checks on him yet again, and this time, she steps into the room, pulling up a chair. Her shift has finally ended, and though he does not know she is here, she knows that this is where she needs to be.

Perhaps there is nothing right now, as a nurse, that she can do for him. But she can be here. Shes got this, she can be a mom again.
