He doesn't laugh much at work. His jokes are always told with a semi-straight face. He receives jokes with a smile, sometimes a chuckle. I mean, it's not like we have much to laugh about, with the job we do. I guess, thinking about it, none of us really laugh at work. It's all small smiles that hide the pain we feel inside. The pain of another victim, another life ruined, buried.
But when we're out, he laughs. And it's this wondrous sound, so free. Almost like he's twenty years younger, allowed to laugh again.
Allowed to sound happy.
