Lifeline
by kori

We are in a normal battle, against some monsters along the
way. In this stupid forest. And there shouldn't be a fucking
problem.

And I don't even see it coming. I hear the monster garble
something that may have been a spell and then, all of a
sudden everything goes dark.

That has never happened before, and no training, no tactical
shit could ever have prepared me for this... this blackness.
Being blind.

Suddenly the world is gone. I hear my blood rushing through
my ears, I feel sweat breaking out on my skin. But I see
*nothing*.

I sway and stumble, my arms reaching out, searching for
support. Shouldn't Irvine be there?

There's a sound, a whimper, and it's me who made it and the
world seems to rock and I try to steady myself and my foot
gets caught somewhere and I fall and fall...

And then there's a body pressed against mine, and arms
wrapped around me, and we sink to the ground, and the world
feels steady again.

"I've got you."

It's Irvine. He's there after all.

"It's just a spell you're under. Don't panic."

I want to tell him that I'm not afraid. But maybe I am.
Maybe that's why his shoulder feels so warm under my face
and the arm around my middle feels like a lifeline in the
middle of chaos.

And then his other arm reaches up to my face, presses
something to my mouth and that something slips past my lips,
down my throat. And there's a warm *something* in my stomach
and it makes my body tingle.

And as suddenly as it was gone the world is back, and I
breathe a sigh of relief against his neck and I don't let go
for a long time.
