If only she knew
Hi Guys! I've never written for this fandom before, although I've been in love with the show for years. This is a series on one shots about one of my favourite couples on the show, Bomber and Spider. Hope you enjoy, and please review!
If only she knew. If only she knew he had tried. Tried to be there for her, whenever possible. To get her to think of him as more than a best friend. To get her to think of him as someone that she could lean on.
It was Spider's last day aboard the H.M.A.S. Hammersley, Buffer, Nav, and himself were all being transferred. Buffer was being promoted, Nav was now going to work on submarines, and as for himself, he was going to join the army. It had shocked the people that knew, the list of which currently consisted of Swain, Buffer, the CO, and the XO.
He couldn't bring himself to tell her. Mainly because he didn't know how she'd react. Mainly she'd be supportive, tell him to write once in a while, perhaps the odd Skype call. But it was the more likely outcome, which scared him.
What if she hated him for it? What if she accused him of running away from his problems? Running away from her? Was he?
As they pulled into port, Spider felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him. He held so many memories from his time on this ship. The time he almost got blown up saving a child from a mine, being kidnapped by a dangerous drug dealer, getting coral poisoning, the deaths of Jaffa and ET. Those ones in particular weren't too enjoyable to relive, but there were some good ones as well.
All the memories with the crew, with Bomber, would last forever.
Spider had a plane to catch, to Canberra, ADFA, specifically. As the rest of the crew said their farewells to Nav and Buffer, Spider silently made his way off the ship, unnoticed. Well, not by everyone.
He had almost got to the security checkpoint, when he heard someone behind him, yelling his name. He turned, in surprise. He knew that voice.
It was Bomber. Who had told her?
She kept running towards him, it was a good three hundred meters from the ship. Spider dropped his bag walked towards her, cautiously.
They finally met, and, to Spider's shock, she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him, so tight he thought she might break one of his ribs.
"You can't just leave, ok? There are people here that need you. Swain, the CO, Charge. Me."
"I'm sorry Bomb, I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I've got to do this. I don't know why, who knows, maybe I'll be back in the Navy by next year, but I have to do this."
"Fair enough. But you call okay? You write, you email, you Skype! Just, stay in contact, okay?"
"I'll make sure of it. Hey, I've got to go, but I'll see you in a few months, okay?"
"You bet", said Bomber, sadness in her voice, and wrapped Spider in another hug.
Spider picked up his bag, and started to walk away.
"Spider?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you"
Unexpected. But that was Bomber for you. Spider grinned at her, reciprocating Bomber's feelings with one emotion, and walked away, out of the Navy.
Hope you enjoyed!
