Prologue
She felt the splatters of blood hit her face, as his body slammed into hers, pinning her against the harsh brick wall, both in an effort to protect her, and in consequence to the guns she knew were aimed for him. Hellish screaming erupted around them, voices in unison, crying out in terror. She looked to see the horror in his wide open eyes. Seconds passed as if they were hours, his body slowly sinking to the ground in front of her. She tried to hold him upright, but eventually his weight brought her down with him. The gunfire continued, the screaming continued, as several other bodies now littered the morbidly red painted sidewalk.
Windows shattered, the glass shards raining down and piercing her skin, as more bullets flew around her. Sharp pain hit her body as she crawled towards the man lying still on the ground. His eyes were open and lifeless, but she still frantically moved her hands over his wounds, his warm blood soaking through her fingers as she tried to stop the bleeding.
And then, it all went silent.
