In their travels, Rin had found a small abandoned hut that she had claimed as there home base. Inside the hut she had painted the walls with flowers and other happy things using a colorful liquid that she had gotten from that woman who followed InuYasha. Sesshomaru couldn't quite put his finger on it…it was on the tip of his tongue. Kakome? Nogome? It didn't matter. It was of no consequence. Whatever the name, Rin enjoyed the gift.
The colors never failed to surprise him. Whenever he walked into the hut he was overcome by the brightness of the paintings. From the outside, the dirty old hut looked like it should be plowed over. But once inside, it became special. When Rin had been painting it, no one was allowed it for any reason. After a week she finally let Sesshomaru and Jaken in. The walls were covered from the floor to the highest she could reach. The door had a flower frame and hearts lined the floor. A rainbow dominated the left wall. The right and back walls were covered by four of them walking through a field of flowers. Rin was very particular about her hut. Whenever Sesshomaru returned to the hut, it was mandatory for him to spend an hour in there with her. She never slept it there though.
Sesshomaru looked at the small child curled up next to the large beast. She was using one of his massive paws as a pillow and the other she had pulled around her like a blanket. Rin wasn't afraid of the beast. To her it was just like a puppy. It was almost like she could see inside its heart. She would sit on its back when she was too tired to walk and when she wasn't feeling well. Once when it had swallowed a poisonous plant, she had stayed awake for two days caring for it. Shesshomaru had never understood the child or how she could love so much, but for some reason, he couldn't help but want her to be around.
Rin never told Sesshomaru that when he came back to the hut and sat in there with him, it didn't matter that the paintings looked nothing like the creatures they were meant to represent or that the hut was completely unlivable. He probably didn't even notice that he did it. The only reason that she made him come back to the hut time after time was that… she had seen him smile.
