Akuma had a brother, Gouken, and both attended the same dojo. Gouken and

Gouki were twins at birth, Gouken being the older, but Gouki being the more mature. They ran away from an orphan home at the age of eight, and slept in a seemingly abandoned dojo, which started their journey as Ansatsuken fighters under the training of Goutetsu, their master. The master was stern, and taught the boys well for nine years. Six months after Gouki and Gouken received their black belts at the age of 17; Gouki returned to the dojo, him and his brother now 18. Gouki challenged his master to fight to the death, and his master gladly accepted, knowing that he may not survive, since his aged body could not keep up anymore, but his wisdom was his only chance. Gouki was a challenge for the wise Goutetsu, but the master had the upper hand, since he taught Gouki everything that he knew, even the Shun Goku Satsu: Instant Hell Murder. This lethal move put the user in jeopardy more than the victim, and if successful, the victim shall suffer great damage, or death. Some die just at the beginning of the attack, user or victim, and in some cases, both.

The fight lasted for hours; the sun was in the east when they had started. Gouki was exhausted; his body badly beaten, but his master's old body was worse. His master charged in with a final attack, but Gouki had other plans, and summoned the hidden power to defeat his master… It connected successfully. The old man could not believe it: the Shun Goku Satsu which he had taught to his much more devoted student had been used to defeat him. Pain surged from limb to limb, but he did not wince, he just lied there, beaten, smiling. Gouki stood over his master his chest proudly presented, his fists clenched. He took the prayer beads that hung around Goutetsu's neck, and put them upon his neck, as if they were a crown to display his surpassing of his former master. Gouki looked Goutetsu in the eyes, seeing he was dying, yet happy that he was. "Master…" Gouki whispered, "…Thank…you." As the sun set, Gouki looked towards the west, seeing the sun set over the horizon. It's late, he thought. He then felt his master's life fade away. He looked down to the beaten body. He's smiling, Gouki thought. He is happy that a student has surpassed him, and shows no fear of this 'evil intent'.

The shadow cast under the body of Goutetsu had resembled the Japanese symbol of Heaven, "Ten". With Goutetsu's arms outstretched, the belt of his gi broken and lying under on either side of him, and his legs outstretched, the sun's light had illuminated his dead body, casting the shadow under it. "Ten", Gouki said under his breath, he bowed, saying a prayer, and prepared to bury his master. After the burial, he prayed again on the tombstone of Goutetsu, this time aloud, saying, "Master, I know that you rest in peace, and I shall bring honor to what you have taught me. I shall fight with pride, testing my limits, pushing them further, to become a Master of Fists. I shall not hold back, I will not see friend or foe. Nothing shall stand in my way, and should I die… I'll be proud. Gouki is no more, master. Gouken called me possessed, when I made my decision to stay and train with you, and said The Devil will consume me. For all I know… I AM THE DEVIL."

With these final words, the once-called Gouki then began his path as Akuma… The Devil.
