An Island
Bonnie and I washed up on the island spitting out salt water. I manage to stand; my legs wobbling almost making me topple over again. I reach down, grab Bonnie's hand, and pull her up. "Thanks, "she says coughing up a little more water. I look at her back; she's managed to keep her backpack although it seems she won't need it here. "I'll look around." "Don't go too far." "I won't." There's a small jungle with palm trees on the edges. I stand underneath one and look into its huge leaves. There are coconuts sitting up there. "Bonnie! I found coconuts!" I try to scale the tree but every time I got height I slid right back down. After my fifth attempt I look at Bonnie. I nod at the tree. "Think you can…." She shrugs. "Sure." She starts sliding her backpack off. Soon a beautiful pair of dragon wings furls out. "Man that feels good." She rotates her shoulders. "I've had them in that backpack for so long." She looks up at the tree then slowly rises off the ground. "Watch out. " Soon coconuts start falling into the sand. "I think that's enough Bonnie." Bonnie lands next to me. She picks one up and starts tossing it up and down. "Know how to open them?" I look at her and smile. "No but I have an idea." I scan the ground and pick up a rock with a jagged end. "Stand back." Bonnie takes a step back. I raise the rock and bring it down hard on the coconut. It cracks but doesn't open. It takes two more hits for it to finally open up. I pick up the part that has the milk in it and hand it to Bonnie. She takes a careful sip. "Mmmmm. It's sweet." She drinks the rest of it. I open one for myself and down it. I wipe my mouth. "Ahhh. Ok we should build a fire to dry off." Bonnie nods then takes off into the jungle. I go around the beach and pick up stones to circle the fire. I find a spot that won't get hit by the water and dig a depression into the sand. Then I circle the stones around the edge of it. I sit down and wait for Bonnie to get back. A few minutes later she appears with wood in her arms. Soon we have a fire going. I sit across from Bonnie letting the fire dry my clothes and warm my skin. It would be dark soon. I lay down on my side. "Do you think anyone will find us?" Bonnie gets up, goes around the fire, and sits down next to me. "Don't worry Kim. When we don't show up people will start searching." I turn onto my back so I can look into her eyes. "I know but how long will that take?" Bonnie starts stroking my hair. "Soon. We're supposed to arrive tomorrow." She kisses my forehead. "You need to get rest." "What about you?" Bonnie laughs. "So many questions. Don't worry I'll go to sleep as soon as I know you are." Bonnie starts singing. I close my eyes and let the words pour into me. "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or wither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there; if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost part of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness will cover me; even the night shall be light around me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee." A calm overcomes me and I let sleep come.
