Sally's Farewell
It should have been Sally begging Jack to remain by her side for eternity, not Jack biding Sally a farewell kiss that would confirm her rising fears.
The moon, which glowed a captivating yellow shade, engulfed the background the two lovers stood before. Hand in hand, Jack and Sally could look nowhere but into the eyes of theirs truly. Sally was born into Jack's life with a timid look and mingled her way into his heart with a courageous concern that displayed the quiet love she felt for him. Jack stepped into Sally's life more than once with his wicked, piercing appearance.
Any woman who didn't belong to the darkness of Halloween Town would have run from Jack's fearful visage. Sally, a woman who blossomed in Halloween Town's shadows, discovered a soft, natural love from Jack's skeletal smile. He was a man that proved to be all she ever wanted. She admired him greatly, cherished him tremendously, and gratified the love he reciprocated. Never once did Sally believe the one man she fell for would fall for her own heart in return.
Doing so made the ultimate sacrifice of a last farewell unbearably painful. Jack would be put to rest before Christmas Eve came. After his threatening take on Christmas' morals, the people of Halloween Town had voted on Jack's punishment. None of his beloved followers wanted to punish their loving Jack but it was for the best. They were fearful of risking a repeat of their last drastic change and knowing Jack had a curiosity that would bring on the most risk, they needed to secure themselves by putting Jack to rest before Christmas. It was their way of silencing their fears.
"But I don't want you to go,"
Sally's voice should have sounded desperate. To Jack, it sounded agonizing, unwilling. She didn't want to let him go; he didn't want to leave her side.
"I have no choice. I have to prove to everyone that I won't betray them ever again, and this is the only way I can do so,"
They were in love, holding each other tightly by their hands, sensing the heart ache that would overshadow them for another year a part. Sally would be alone, feeling dead in her tears and alive only in the new memories she shared with Jack. She knew he'd return to her but waiting was more than torture for her breaking heart.
"I can beg them to see it that you've changed! You've realized your mistakes, the damage you've caused—"
She couldn't continue once Jack's sharp, stitch lips were on her unsuspecting ones. No matter how sharp Jack's lips were they never once made her lips bleed. He knew just how to kiss her delicate lips and leave her in a calm longing.
"They'll make that decision on their own when they regain their trust in me,"
Sally caught the crack in his voice; Jack felt the crack in her heart.
He kept his voice steady, "But knowing that you trust me,"
Just for Sally to understand the words escaping from his heart, "Is all I need to know,"
Because there were no other words he wanted to say more than the words that meant the dearest to his beloved, "For it will ensure that I rest in peace,"
And for Sally, those words would warm the coldness she'd feel tonight in a bed sleeping alone until Jack awoke from his rest come next Halloween.
