It was a beautiful day in Death City, Nevada. The birds were singing, children laughed and played, butterflies flew in the ocean blue skied scattered with fluffy, white clouds-
At least, that is how Soru imagined it.
Instead, the fifteen year old was standing grumpily in the middle of the rain, completely basked in the foggy area that barely showed DWMA's spectacular premises. The hundreds of stair steps she has yet to climb made her day worsen, despite being excited in the morning. However, the moment her parents bade her farewell and she took one step outside, hell arose.
The fact that she forgot her umbrella did not help matters, but she sucked it up and marched forward. Besides, she was about to attend the most prestigious Death Weapon Meister Academy in the world! Petty things such as rain or slipping on sidewalks is enough to make any student laugh.
Soru slowly tied her damp blue hair in a long pony tail and growled before stomping up the steps while dragging her suitcase behind.
"Stupid weather... stupid school... stupid parents..." Although she did not know why she was cursing her parents. She just needed to direct her irritation to something.
"Ugh... Could this day get any worse!?" She screamed at the sky and received a thunder boom in response. She blew her floppy bangs from her eyes and continued to walk up the stairs.
Why did this school have so many stairs!? What was the purpose of it? Aren't every student athletic enough if they are going to a CRIME FIGHTING SCHOOL?
'Too bad I can't run... This lousy weather did it in for me.' She thought moodily and hummed when a figure whipped past her. Her ruby eyes widened when the African-American student continued running up without slipping even once. And she was new based on the badge first year N.O.T. students are given now. Soru looked down at her slow paced walking. How pathetic.
"If she can run up there, what makes it seem I can't?" She whispered to herself and threw her backpack over her shoulder. Before she could start hopping two steps, an accented voice spoke up behind her.
"I wouldn't recommend it if I were you." Soru frowned and turned her head to meet a blonde haired guy.
Oh great.
"But you saw the way she run up there. I don't wanna be late for the first day of school." The boy walked beside her now.
"She's not hopping those steps. Her shoes, if you would notice..." Both students looked at the small figure reaching the half-way point of the stairs. Indeed, Soru found out that the person was hopping but... floating at the same time. As though she was touching invisible dry surface with each step.
"How!?" She yelled and the boy grinned.
"I've never seen shoes like that either. Her mum or dad must be geniuses." Soru blinked at the accent in the boy's voice.
"Are you British?" She shamelessly asks. The boy shook his head with an exasperated smile.
"Irish. I have been getting questions like that all last year. This is my second year by the way." The boy then walked up ahead of her and Soru voiced her awe. The school must be known nationally if all types of ethnic groups are entering. She wondered how her dad was able to become the strongest meister in such a diverse combat school.
'How cool... Maybe I can endure these stairs.' And with the thought of what the school could look like, Soru began climbing the steps faster. She even passed the Irish student, and was making her way toward the girl with hover shoes.
"My dad said it was the best school he had ever gone to. He felt like he had family there. He's been through so much and had the time of his life beating everyone in fights. Sounds dangerous but... exciting." She speaks softly to herself, then looked up and grinned widely when the top of the stairs became noticeable.
"And I'll be able to carry on his legend. Wahoo!" The girl in front turned around, but Soru shot past her with a maniac laugh.
"I'm gonna live up to my dad's expectations! I'm gonna became an awesome meister, challenge everyone, and have lots of loyal subjects- a-ah, friends!" She shouted enthusiastically and when she slammed her foot on the marble floor of the school, she threw her hands in the air. "And I just got passed my first challenge! Stairs!"
Soru heard the sound of a paper flapping turned her head to see a student with wide eyes from a bench. Her hands slowly lowered and her grin turned into a nervous.
"H-hey there... dude. Nice book there, pal." She pointed out desperately, but the boy continued to stare at her.
"I'll uh... I'll leave you alone now." Soru dashed away from sight and into the school building without a second look.
'First ten minutes of school and I already made a fool of my self.'
And surprisingly, it was no longer raining.
"And those are your expectations as a N.O.T. student in DWMA. Today, we will be starting with getting to know each other and matching each other's wavelengths. Partners shall always consist of one meister and one weapon. The only exceptions are dual weapons. Got that?" A blue zombie said and all the nervous students shook their heads hesitantly. The man nodded before grinning light-heatedly and clapping his hands together.
"Alrighty then. Chop, chop!"
Soru looked around and she realized she was the only one standing in the same spot. All the kids were already laughing and joking together. Soru grimaced and looked around, trying to catch someone's eye without looking too desperate. Then she caught the girl from earlier hopping around from person to person.
"Hi! I'm Air Kingston! I like lizards! Mimes! The color white! And hammers!" She screamed the last part at Soru, who twitched when her ears rung.
"Why would you like hammers?" She asked while rubbing her ear. Airi drew herself up proudly.
"My daddy was a melee meister and I like the idea of hitting, instead of slicing. I feel better knowing I am hurting the enemy." Soru raised an eyebrow, but gave a weary smile.
"Wow. You sound so much like my dad. He's a dark assassin, but he likes beating the crap out of people too." Airi 'ooh'ed in amazement and raised a slender arm while patting her bicep.
"Well, my daddy has been training me like crazy before he left. He said being in this academy is not all about strength though, but getting along with your partner. I'm very outgoing, you see." Soru definitely saw alright, as the girl went around the room shouting out more nonsense.
"Lucky. I wish I wasn't so darn conscious about myself," she muttered to herself and heard the bell rang. The zombie clapped his hands once more and shouted for them to continue working on trying to gain partners.
"We will also have two special guests here tomorrow! So for now, focus on what I said earlier!" Soru still could not figure out why the campus is letting a never-aging zombie teach a class, but she merely followed everyone else out the door.
The next period was Lab, which she did not know why it was needed if she was going to fight kishins later on. She she sat down, someone else sat beside her.
"So how was class?" It was the Irish boy from earlier.
"Oh you know... new."
"Made any friends yet?" Soru stared blankly, before comically giving a crestfallen look, and the boy stared grinned as he held out a hand.
"Haha, I can already tell the numbers by that one. Count me as your first one. My name is Collin Bovirran." Soru graciously snatched his hand with a watery smile.
"My name is Soru Evans Star." Just as he froze in shock, Soru ran off for her next period.
"Evans? Star?"
