I am Legend

New York, New York

A city so nice they named it twice

Now I only see emptiness

Deserted streets of silence

This is where joy once lived

Where laughter and smiles were as ubiquitous as the sun

But disease claimed the lives of many

Cut short the happiness of almost everyone it touched

Our search for a cure lead to many developments

We found a way to reverse engineer it, turn it from a destructive ailment to work in our favour

But there was no way, we could have anticipated this

Billions of sentient beings wiped out of existence

As if they never even mattered

As if they were insignificant creatures with no hope or future

They were gone

And many more became something worse

Demons roaming the earth in humanoid form

Roaming at night as if the suns smile is too much a reminder of their former selves

I have not seen a healthy human being for many moons

Not spoken to someone with the ability to speak back for over 1000 days

But I maintain this routine, exercise, and healthy eating

Never take more than what is needed

Greet the mannequins at the rental store when I see them

This keeps me sane

At least I believe it does

I'm not really sure anymore

And now that my only friend is gone

I struggle to find something worth living for.
