Work of the Devil

How on earth had it come to be that he was married to a witch? Of all the years that he had known his beloved Isobel, how had he never realised it? The word was a word that he told others to fear; he told them witchcraft was the work of the devil. And yet, he was married to one.

Isobel had broken down in many tears. Her sobbing had just subsided moments ago, and now she had drifted into a restless sleep. Robert couldn't sleep. So much was going through his mind, how could he possibly manage to fall asleep now?

Making sure his wife would not stir, Robert made his way to Minerva's bedroom. The small child was sleeping peacefully. She was so beautiful, so unaware of anything. How could somebody so innocent possess the powers of –"

No! There was nothing wrong with Minerva. She was perfect.

He made his way to the back door of their cottage. It was well past midnight now, but that didn't stop Robert from leaving the house. The stars were bright in the sky tonight, and the cool air freshened him from the shock that had come just hours earlier.

It all made sense, really. His wife's odd behaviour, why she kept Minerva hidden at times. He didn't blame her, really. After all, what he believed countered everything that she was. However, anger was still present within him. How was he supposed to ever trust his wife again?

He looked up to the sky and thought silently, Please, God, let this be okay. And then his wife's figure was beside him, tear tracks still on her face. She looked at him in a way he had never seen her look at him before. She was devastated; heartbroken.

"I'm so sorry I kept it from you for so long."

Anger was still seeping through him, but one look at his wife drained his energy to remain angry. Letting out a breath of the cool air, he put his arm across her shoulders. "Don't be ridiculous, love. I understand." It wasn't a complete lie. Of course he understood to some extent.

"You have every right to be angry with me," Isobel continued, shocked by his sudden understanding.

"I know." He looked up at the stars again.

"But please don't hate Minerva."

"I never could."

Relief seemed to fill Isobel after that, and she sunk into him as she had done many times before.

"I do have one question, however," Robert said after a moment. "Your kind… do they… fly on broomsticks?"

Isobel nodded. "But only for sport," she assured him.

"And do you?"

She shook her head and smiled slightly with tear-filled eyes. "No," she said, "I'm scared of heights."

Robert held her tighter. He was glad about that.
