She sleeps

Disclaimer: I don't own iCarly or anything connected with it, except Suzy, as I created her in the infinite realms of my imagination.

The evening was warm- well, it was night now and evening was long gone. Spencer was restless- he often was in the summer, the warm nights seemed like wasted time if he slept through them. He got out of bed and sloped to the kitchen of his apartment, conscious of his younger sister asleep upstairs. He wasn't sure if Sam was up there too- she often was and her presence in the apartment was now so familiar that he never could remember whether she had gone home or decided to stay the night. It didn't matter really- whatever made her and Carly happy. He was no replacement for their parents but he wanted Carly to be as happy as possible and if having Sam there all the time was what made his little sister happy, then it was fine with him. Although she did eat them out of house and home. He was about to turn a light on when he noticed that he wasn't alone in the room. The adjoining living room was dark but he could just make out the form of a person, covered with a blanket. Sam usually slept upstairs and Freddie was not accustomed to staying over on the couch. There was only one other person it could be. She was sleeping silently he discovered, upon walking over to the couch. He smiled and perched on the arm of the sofa, trying his best to keep quiet. She had started doing that recently, if she had to work late. She didn't like going home to an empty flat late at night, but he and Sam were her only allies in town. She had only been here for a few months, and now that Sam was living with her she was starting to fell her feet a bit more, but it took time to forget, he knew that. So if Sam was out and she faced going home to a dark empty apartment, she would sometimes take Carly up on the offer to take the couch for the night in the Shay apartment. He had noticed it once or twice, but the past few days he had thought of her so much…..

She was lying on her side, covered with a red blanket up to her shoulders. She looked very peaceful and calm, and wherever she was in her dreams, he found himself wishing that he was there too. He watched her for a while- she didn't move or stir but she seemed to almost smile every so often. She seemed very comfortable here on his couch. Watching her sleep was like some sort of confirmation for him. He had seen a lot of her over the past few months and every time he saw her he was a little bit more sure. But what could he say? How would Carly and Sam feel about it? Did she like him too? Did she think of him at all? Or was he just the brother of Sam's best friend? So many doubts and questions seemed to spin around in his mind, but somehow, here in the dark with the stars shining through the window on the two of them, none of that seemed to matter. He would never know if he didn't say something. He could not afford for her to go on not knowing. If there was a chance, he would take it. It was too much of a risk to take if he didn't- suppose she should go awayand leave him, and he never told her how much…. No, that won't happen, he thought. I will tell her tomorrow. Perhaps she would run a mile, or perhaps he would find her here every night and every day as a result of his revelation, but one thing was for sure. He couldn't stand it any longer. He smiled and tugged the red blanked around her a little further. I will tell her, he thought, as he went to the window to look out at the little lights below and the stars above. Perhaps they would one day stand together and do the same, watch the stars from his window. He would like that. He thought she would too. Tomorrow would come soon, and then his waiting would be over.
