Coach quickly threw his molotov in front of him, swiftly running backwards and keeping his eye on the tank. He had dropped his gun only five minutes ago from a shortage of ammo, and the molotov was the only thing he had left.
"Wadda we do?!" Ellis screamed from behind the elder.
For once in his life, Coach had no answer. He simply shook his head and Ellis knew that it was possible the team wasn't indestructible.
Rochelle already had proven that, dying a few days ago. She got lost in the rain and the group hadn't seen her since.
"Safe room up ahead!" Nick yelled, grabbing his magnum as a last resort. Of course he knew it wouldn't do any damage, but what the hell, it was all he had left.
Running into the damaged house and slamming the metal door behind them, the three fell to the ground. The tank losing sight of the group and turning around.
"Damn..." Ellis mumbled as he lay on the floor, his chest rapidly moving up and down.
"Our group is falling apart. If we can't even take out a tank anymore, then we'll be a bunch of lucky son of bitches to make it to the next safe area." Coach panted.
"What's the point of even moving on anymore?" Nick complained.
Ellis sat up and stared at Nick.
"The point? The point is I wan' survive, Nick! I wan' live to see the zombie apocalypse be completely wiped out. I wanna see if my goddamn family sur'vived! I don't know if you even had a family, but I do know if you did you prolly' wouldn't even care bout' them!"
As Ellis buried his head into his knees, Nick turned and locked himself in a room. Coach knew he couldn't do anything, like he used to be able to.
2 hours later
Nick pressed his ear against the wall, making sure Coach was snoring. As soon as he was positive Coach was asleep, he slipped out of his room and opened the safe room door. The air was hot and sticky, making the smell of rotting flesh almost unbearable. Nick climbed up a ladder that led to the rooms roof. He lay down on top of the roof, watching the stars.
"Ey' I'm sorry Nick..." Ellis's voice startled Nick. He didn't think the hick was awake.
"Yeah.. uh it's alright. Really."
"No.. it's not alrigh' I know I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry."
Ellis climbed onto the roof, laying down next to Nick and placing his head on the gambler's chest.
Nick faced burned, he hadn't ever touched Ellis, sentimentally.
"The truth is, I love ya' Nick. You're like a big bro. I know I can always count on ya'."
The gambler should've known Ellis thought of him only as a big brother, not as a lover. But he didn't blame the hick. Nick made it seem as though he never would love anybody.
"Yeah. A big brother..."
"An' no matter what. I'll protect you."
"I promise to protect you to, Ellis."
Ellis sat up and planted a kiss onto Nick's lip before saying goodnight and heading back into the safe room.
