What the Lighthouse Said
by Mainecoon

I glimpsed a vision draped in blue and purple haze: the shining sea;
And thought I saw a lighthouse there -- a cyclops blinking lazily.
It turned its head, flashed, and was gone; and never more to find the shore
An ivory ship with tall sails blown sailed on towards sunset ever more.

The night came quickly to the sand, the water froze still rippling.
I threw a wish into the cold and thought I heard a sailor sing
Of lands beyond the kindly West, where rain is warm, where grass is green,
Where ancient Children shall return, their magic burn with light unseen.

I wondered if the silent ship who danced between the sea and sky
Was one more ancient mariner, a wandering poet just as I.
The ember-red horizon flickered; then I saw a single star
That seemed to wink and glance down to a place where now no Children are.

This is the world we made ourselves. So where have all the ancients gone?
Perhaps they've found a kindlier West, perhaps they've found their glistening dawn.
I still can see that ghostly ship, the vessel of a dying race,
When I dream of a friend I knew who sailed to find a better place.

Perhaps he found a heaven there, perhaps his glass is filled with wine.
Well, he can keep his paradise, but while I'm living, I'll make mine.
I'll build it from the memory of that one night upon the shore,
The time the lighthouse said to me "You, too, may come to Valinor."

...end...
