Dead Nature
He lies there on their bed, eyes looking at the ceiling. His fingers rub one another in a constant rhythm, he feels kind of bad about not doing anything about it, and for reassuring himself that everything was going to be alright.
It's been about two hours or so.
She hasn't come back yet.
Usually she would make daily plans to go out into the forest and interact with the animals that lived in the area. Whether it be in the morning, afternoon, or evening, she would always come back before night.
It's currently eight.
He decides that he's had enough waiting with false hope, going into the forest alone at night would be plain suicide, so instead he opts to get an officer on hand. Something that he should have done at the first sign of suspicion. Upon realizing this, he wonders if he can't possibly get any stupider, and what place he has achieved in the list of worst husbands on the planet.
Granted, it's the first time he's really experienced a situation like this. Perhaps his worriness was just blinding him?
Whatever the case, if there was one thing he did know. It was that he wasn't going to be living the rest of his life alone, that time was already filled up by his childhood. A time that he doesn't enjoy looking back on.
He's sure that she doesn't want to die alone either. For her life wasn't any socially different than his.
More and more thoughts about their past and other irrelevant memories crowd his head, the lingering possibility that it could all be over is nothing short of frightening to him. Without her, without her in his life, by his side, he has nothing.
Or at least, he feels as if he has nothing. With just about everyone he cares about having abandoned or given up on him except for her, this isn't too farfetched of an idea.
As he grabs the phone to get help, the doorknob turns.
He puts the phone down and gasps.
It's her, sans a few minor changes. She has leaves and twigs stuck in her hair, and her clothes were slightly torn. Other than that, it's the same Dawn that he's grown to love over the past few years.
He's still taken by surprise, even as she walks over to him, "I'm back! Sorry I'm a bit late, did I startle you or something?"
He nods.
"I see, well I apologize. You see, after my meditation, I came across an injured baby bird. The blessed little thing, I assumed he fell from his nest. I couldn't just leave him there, so I patched him up the best I could. Then as I was walking home, I came across this rather large ruffian of a bear!"
His eyes widen, as he assumes that that is the reason why her clothing looks torn to pieces.
"Not to worry though, I gave him the old one-two!" she assures as she punches her fists into the air.
He cocks an eyebrow, that implication was definitely one he didn't see coming.
"Huh? Oh, no no! I didn't fight the poor thing, B! That's not in my nature, no matter how treacherous the animal is. I just gave him a simple pep talk, that's all. It turns out he had the tiniest of splinters bothering his paw, poor thing. I helped him out by removing it, and he assisted me in return by giving me a ride home. That's probably where all these marks came from." she finishes her story with a giggle, as if it wasn't a big deal.
"Anyway, that's my story. Again I apologize if I made you feel worried but- O-oh! Oh my!" she's startled as a sudden hug lifts her off her feet. That was one thing she didn't see coming, but she enjoys it regardless.
He's glad he isn't going to be alone for another good decade or two.
Her innocence was going to be the death of him someday.
