Passengers

The plane was cruising over the Caribbean Sea, as Dean felt his new brides hand twitch. He rubbed her hand, gliding over the new golden band on her finger, the band that matched his. The couple had been engaged since the spring of 1964, secretly of course, as Colette was not quite ready to give up flying. Just weeks before after her thirty-first birthday Colette had been sick and had eventually discovered she was pregnant. The decision about when to give up flying had been made for her. They finally married a month later in an intimate ceremony with Dean's parents and their friends from Pan Am. Maggie of all people had been the one to catch the bouquet.

"You okay," he whispered as she looked out the window. She had been quiet for much for the flight. He wondered if the ill-named morning sickness was back. He noticed her spare hand resting on her green dress, just touching her stomach.

"It has been a while since I have flown as a passenger," she replied as she looked longingly at the Pan Am stewardess walking down the aisle.

The two of them getting married had meant the end of Colette's flying career and while she was happy with the new chapter in her life as a wife and soon-to-be mother, she could not help but grieve for that part of her life. She would miss the blue uniform and the thrill of landing in a new city every week. She would miss the adventure and the exploration.

Dean opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by the intercom.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," Laura called on the intercom. Little Cameron was the purser of the flight and had been the unofficial wedding photographer for Dean and Colette's wedding. "Pan Am would like to welcome two very special passengers today, Mr. and Mrs. Dean and Colette Lowery. Dean is a pilot with Pan Am and Colette used to be a stewardess with us. The two of them are celebrating their honeymoon in sunny St. Lucia."

Dean slid down into his seat as the first class cabin started clapping, a huge smile covered Colette's face. She placed a soft kiss on Dean's lips as Laura walked down the aisle with a bottle of Champagne.

"Only a small glass for Colette," she winked.

Colette had been reluctant to tell anyone else about the baby, wanting to have some time to get used to the news herself, but Laura had caught her reading a book on pregnancy and had been told. Laura was going to keep their secret until they officially announced it, which would be when they returned home from their honeymoon.

"I could get used to being a passenger," Dean whispered as he poured just one glass of champagne. He offered Colette the glass for her to have just a sip but she shook her head.

"I think I could too," she replied as the pilot announced they were ready for landing.
