Scythe
A Soul Story
Written by Canned Noot
Prologue
Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot, Leo muttered under his breath as he ran. The padded noise of his black boots on the cobble stone underneath him echoed through the silent night. His feet flew across the ground as he ran. His feet felt like blocks of lead, but determination kept him going like an engine. He needed to find someone, someone important.
Rows of stone buildings flew past him as he ran through the deserted city. He passed the empty streets and vacant plazas as he rushed by. In the dead of the night, the busy city turned into a ghost town. Leo's heavy panting was the noisiest sound around. He worried someone would hear him. The city was a maze of houses, shops and buildings. But he knew this city like the back of his hand. It was his home, and the only place he had ever known. Even at an unfocused sprint, he would still know which streets to cross and where to turn to get anywhere. He knew every shortcut and secret tunnel in the city. With his knowledge, he could get anywhere.
The large round moon hung right above his head, casting a pale, ghostly light upon the ground in front of him.
Leo noticed the moon above and grimaced, "I have no time, he thought to himself "I have to keep going." He hurried his already rushed steps, breaking into a sprint. The air around him cooled the sweat beads that had started to form on his face. His long black cloak fluttered behind him as he ran.
"Where in the world is she?" he thought angrily. He made his last turn into an abandoned alleyway that widened into a large circular space, surrounded by dirty old buildings. He stopped his sprinting and came to a sudden halt. He placed his hands on his knees and tried to catch his breath. He felt relieved for only split second.
"She should be here," he thought. He started to worry.
"Where is she, she has to be here, I need her right now," Leo looked around wildly trying to find her."It's coming," he thought, something he knew was going to happen, something he had dreaded, something he was unprepared for. He looked behind him trying to find her.
"It's coming," he thought again. But nothing happened.
"Perhaps I am safe here," he thought trying to reassure himself. But he spoke too soon. The air turned cold and there was an evil vibe to it, it seemed as if it thickened and it became overwhelmingly moist as it turned into a thick mist. Thoughts were rushing all around Leo's head. Not being able to control anything and become calm and composed, he panicked.
"What do I do, what do I do" he thought to himself. And then it happened. A low moan came from behind him. It was the kind of moan that comes from deep inside a belly. The moan echoed between the buildings and in his skull. Leo was paralyzed with fear.
"I have to do something" he thought, but his body didn't cooperate. It was right behind him, he could feel its breath crawling up his back like a spider. Its breath was hot and reeked of dead flesh. Leo slowly turned around, and saw it. He screamed and tried to run, pure terror had come upon his face. But suddenly, out of absolutely nowhere there was a sharp cutting sound and then the horrifying screech of the creature, a flash of red then green, followed by the loud clanking of metal hitting the ground.
"Something had impaled it and wounded it badly, Who was it? Who could it be? Was it her?" Leo asked himself. Leo was still to scared to comprehend what just happened. The thick fog lifted as the creature left and laying right in front of him, was the darkest and sleekest scythe you could ever dream of. It was jet black and hammered to perfection. It could cut through anything. A seven foot deadly weapon, it was her.
