Hero to zero, just like that.
You were their (hers and his) hero, because you were Riku. Older, if only by one year, wiser and stronger. You could protect her from the monsters under her bed and help him through a thunder storm. You knew there were no such things as cooties or the boogie man. You could beat Tidus, Wakka and Sora at just about anything (because you were Riku) but as they grew up, they needed less and less because he could fight his own fears and protect her from hers. But you never stopped being their hero, not once, but you couldn't see that.
You began to see life differently and you fell into the darkness (because you were Riku.) You couldn't save anyone in the state you were in and he ended up taking your glory. But it didn't really matter because it was their story and you weren't a part of it. It angered you to be the third wheel, because you used to be their hero, you were nothing but a boy that was trapped in the darkness.
But you never stopped being their hero, not until the very end. Because in that action, of stealing a heart, you suddenly became a villain and in a split second you were nothing to either of them. Didn't they remember because it was all you could think about (because you were Riku.)
Memories are nice, but that's all they are.
You were the villain and he was the hero, you were stuck in a kingdom because you were sealed away, you have chosen your path and there was no going back. You were a villain after all, but you could change, because you were Riku. You would show them that you were still their (hers and his) hero. But how could you face them? You couldn't dare think about it. But sometimes it crawled into your thoughts when you thought about them. You would find a way, somehow.
Because you were Riku.
