Prologue

"Hey Heidi, any biters?" Felix asks before looking up at the crowd of people flowing in. "Oh nice catch!"

"It was a piece of cake" she answered before laughing at the irony. Felix joins in and the hall fills with soprano and tenor bells. The ringing ends as Gianna opens the door, revealing the majestic tower room.

"Come, come," says Heidi in a sickly sweet voice. "This is the tower room. Legend has it that no human has ever returned after entering it, of course that's only legend." After flashing her teeth, she runs at vampire speed to close the doors. After the bellowing thud, the screaming begin.

Among the crowd, a young woman holds her newborn close. Aro creeps behind her and bites the woman's exposed throat, tearing the flesh easily. She screeches and falls to her knees, placing the infant on the ground. As she collapses beside her child, she uses her dying breath to whisper "I love you, Serena."

Aro hears this and notices the baby for the first time. Grinning to himself, he bends down to pick her up. He cradles the angel in his arms, admiring her beauty. The first thing that comes to his mind is vampire child, but then he hears the soft beating of her heart. In his bloodlust, he can't resist her blood, but he is already mourning the loss of such beauty. But as he opens his mouth he feels a shock. His eyes widen in surprise as he realizes that the baby in his arms has done the unthinkable. She, a human, had read his mind.

Aro hides the baby under his cloak as he ascends his throne. He takes her out and his arms make a cold cradle, but she doesn't appear to mind as he slowly rocks her to sleep while his associates continue to terrorize the remaining humans.

In his infatuation with the girl, he doesn't notice Jane approaching. Her lips curl back as she smells the blood and her eyes flicker to the small infant.

"What do you have master, a snack for later?" she says with an angelic smile as she reaches out her mind to the girl. A second too late Aro cries "NO!" but Jane is already on the floor withering in agony. The hall becomes silent.

Aro chuckles to himself and mutters "I tried to warn you."

Jane gasps as she is freed of her own painful grip. "What is that?"

"The newest member of our guard."

A chorus of whats? and nos! echoes across the ceiling and walls. Cauis and Marcus immediately run to the thrones to see the baby and give Aro their thoughts.

Surely you can't be serious Aro?! She is not yet old enough to change! Cauis' thoughts slithered through Aro's mind. You of all people can't forget the law! A vampire child!

"Nobody said anything about that Cauis." Aro replies softly. Cauis' eyes question more than his thoughts, but Aro is listening to Marcus. Some of the thoughts he was trying to suppress came through with his reasoning.

She is adorable! Um, Aro, I think I can see the potential, but we have to figure out how we can keep her. We can't make her a vampire as a child, that's against the rules completely. However we could let her live with us… he trailed of into planning the possibility.

"That is exactly what I came up with Marcus. But we have to clue Cauis in."

"Of course" This will be fun. Aro laughs for a second and then moves to tell Cauis.

"Cauis, do you know what this girl's power is?"

"Power?! She's a human! How can this be?" Cauis rants. After he gets a handle on himself, he places his hand on Aro's shoulder again.

What is the power than? Aro smiles to himself before answering.

"Please control yourself this time. You are worrying the guards. But yes, the baby has the power to reflect any vampires' power back at them." Cauis' eyes widen and, though he does not make a sound, his thoughts are vicious and Aro shrinks away from the degree of surprise rage and more surprise. Cauis retracts his hand, but is still debating.

Aro returns his gaze to the baby, and thinks of how useful her talent would be. The guard would be in amazing shape and the Volturi would be even more powerful! But he could not deny the fact that there was something else that attracted him to this child. Something else that he saw in Marcus' eyes as well. But neither of them would have to deny it, because nobody would ever ask.

"Aro?" says Cauis quietly.

"Yes?"

"What do you think Heidi will say about decorating a new room?" Aro smiles in pure delight, with Marcus mirroring the expression as well. They knew this was his acceptance and permission to keep the child.

"Why don't we ask her?"
