In Azkaban, Sirius reflects on how wrong he was in suspecting Remus instead of Peter. He should've known, should've known the little rat's sneaky game.

He should've known that Peter was the traitor, not Remus. Why was he so stupid? He can now remember, sitting in his cell in Azkaban, all the times that Peter pulled him aside, reiterating the fact that he thought Remus was acting strangely. Reflecting back on it now, Sirius sees Peter's little game. The quiet, unassuming little man who he didn't think could hurt a fly ended up killing all those people. And for what? A destroyed Dark Lord and life as a rat. Charming. Sirius laughs bitterly, the sound echoing through the fortress of Azkaban. He should've known it was Peter, that it was Peter all along, and he'll never forgive himself for not figuring it out before it was too late.
