Leela loved the rain.

It was so magical. The way the sky which was clear a few seconds ago could suddenly become dark and stormy. The way the heavens opened up and the speed with which the rain went from a drizzle to a downpour.

The Time Lords didn't believe in magic of course, they didn't believe in anything except their numbers and science. Romana had often tried to teach her about weather phenomenons and atmospheric changes, big words that made Leela's head spin. There were some things in the world that just weren't meant to be explained with reason and logic. Doing so would only rob it of its charm and mystery. A rainbow was beautiful, but when the Time Lords looked at it, all they saw was a collection of colors.

The rain was fair. It did not give more to the plants or to the animals. In a strange way, Leela felt honored to be considered an equal of the silver Cadonwood trees, for she could neither flower nor bear fruit. She had nothing to offer, but the rain did not think that meant she deserved less. That, Leela mused, was something the Time Lords could learn.

Rain was the giver of life, where it fell flowers and trees sprang from the ground. Animals relished in the rain and welcomed its presence. But the Time Lords did not. They built walls to separate themselves from nature, just as they built barriers to keep the rest of the universe out. The rain could not penetrate these walls, and so the city grew more and more dusty.

Leela loved the rain. The way it soaked her hair and fell on her face. The raindrops on her face felt like a gentle caress. Sitting in the rain, she could forget about her troubles, about the world she never understood. They call her a savage, but she doesn't care.
