Chapter One –
-o-o-
I've been lonely.
I've been waiting for you.
I'm pretending, and it's all I can do.
The love I'm sending ain't making it through to your heart.
Sean let out a sigh, as he continued to tap the fingers of his right hand on the desk before him, his head supported by his left arm, which was also firmly positioned on the desk.
This is what my life has become, he thought to himself, silently. It was true; the life of Dr. Sean McNamara was officially tapped to empty. Without Christian around, life had grown stale, bland, and all around boring in quite a hurry.
"Sean?"
He looked up, at hearing his name being called, and turned his attention to the office door. There, standing in the doorway, was the source of the ever so familiar sounding voice.
"Yeah, Liz?" Sean questioned, straightening his back up, a little.
Liz smiled. "I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving."
A look of surprise covered Sean's features. "What time is it?"
Liz gave another, more saddening smile. "It's nine-thirty."
Sean groaned at Liz's words, and buried his face in his hands. He inhaled, deeply, and exhaled, loudly, catching the attention of an already very concerned Liz.
"Are you all right, Sean?" she asked, growing more and more concerned with every passing second.
Inhaling again, this time sharply through his nose, Sean looked up. "I'm fine," he assured his head nurse, throwing in an obviously fake smile for show. "Have a good night."
Liz looked a bit taken back by Sean's quick dismissal, but she said nothing; she knew that he was still hurting. "Good night, Sean."
The two exchanged smiled, neither one very cheerful, and Liz turned, and left, leaving Sean to his thoughts. Thoughts that, as usual, returned to that one faithless night, the one night that was all completely his fault.
"Mr. McNamara?" the uniformed officer had asked, when Sean answered the door.
"Can I help you?" he asked, the situation not completely registering in his mind. Suddenly, it hit him. "Oh, God! What happened? Is it Julia? Are my kids okay?" Sean grew frantic, and had the instinct to bolt from his house, start up the car, and get to Julia's place as fast as he could.
The young officer shook his head. "Sir, your family is fine."
Sean let out a loud sigh. "Thank God!" he breathed, with a little bit of laughter in his voice. "Sorry. Now, how can I help you?"
The officer bit his bottom lip, quickly. "Do you know a Mr. Christian Troy?"
Sean jerked up, and awake. At some point, he had put his head down on the desk, and had fallen asleep.
"God," he breathed, trying to shake the thoughts and dreams of the night six months before from his head. He rose from his seat, behind the oversized desk, the desk where he and Christian usually sat, met with potential patients and clients, together, as a team. There had used to be just the perfect amount of space behind the desk. Now, however, there was just way too much room.
God, how he missed Christian Troy.
