A/N: Right, before this story begins I would like to point out that I have not yet experienced the joys of giving birth and I don't intend to for a while. So I apologise for any inaccuracies in the procedure of the birth. I had fun writing this so I hope you enjoy it!
"Can you believe her? Saying she's perfectly fine to go to work when she's almost due for her baby!" Ron exclaimed as he and Harry apparated behind some rose bushes to be hidden from Muggles.
"That's just Hermione, she'd hate to be stuck at home like a stereotypical wife," Harry said as the two of them climbed out, ignoring the scratches from the thorns.
"I know that! But she's crazy if she wants to be under all that pressure when the baby could pop out at any minute!"
"Babies don't pop out-"
"Harry, I'm not dumb," Ron glared at him while Harry grinned. "What's the time anyway?"
"Uh... ten past eight."
"Seriously? Bloody hell, Hermione is going to kill me," Ron stated as he and Harry walked in front of Ron and Hermione's house.
"How many times have you said that now? 100? 200? And yet you're still alive," Harry laughed.
"It's no picnic being told off by your wife," Ron muttered injecting the key into the lock.
"I've had my fair share of arguments too," Harry said, following Ron as they entered the house. It had a lovely, homely type feel about it, Harry thought. The deep red carpet and the intricate gold and red wallpaper which had moving pictures and portraits hung on to it. They were the colours of Gryffindor.
"Hermione?" Ron called out with a tentative tone as he expected Hermione to burst out and approach Ron with a stern look on her face. No one came. Ron and Harry exchanged glances.
"Hermione!" Ron said, a little louder this time. He suddenly went to the worst possible scenarios; they had been robbed, or Hermione had been kidnapped or worse-
"Hermione! Hermione, are you alright?" Ron had a panicked tone to his voice now.
"Ron, I think she's in the sitting room!" Harry said and opened the door to mentioned room. The two men clambered in desperately and they spotted Hermione. It didn't seem like she was robbed. She was certainly not kidnapped...
"Hermione," Ron breathed as he knelt down beside the sofa she was lying down on. She murmuring softly and rubbing her bulging stomach. Harry followed suit but let Ron clasp her hand. Harry spotted something damp on the side of the sofa. His eyes widened.
"Ron... my water's broke," Hermione looked at him with a scared look etched on her face. Ron paled.
"Blimey... your... already? But you're not due for another week!"
"The baby's coming... it's coming- AHHHH!" Hermione screamed as the first contraction came into play. Harry and Ron looked at each other. Hermione was having a baby. At home. And what did she have? Her husband and her best friend who had little to none experience.
"Harry! HARRY! What are we going to do?" Ron exclaimed, half-hysterical as Hermione crushed his hand.
"Okay, okay, we have no time to get her to the hospital-"
"We need to though! We need a doctor Harry! Can't we just use side-along apparition-"
"No, no way, she's far too weak," Harry said, shaking his head as he got up. If the Hermione who wasn't-about-to-start-labour heard this, he would've set her off on a rage about women being just as strong as men. He thought frantically. He had had experience of having a baby (not literally- Ginny actually had it, of course) but that's when they were lucky enough to have the baby on the due date. It still didn't make things much easier though.
"We need to carry her upstairs, Ron." Harry told him. "The sofa won't be a good place to have a baby, she might fall off!"
"Right, okay," Ron carefully and quickly scooped Hermione up in his arms. She moaned.
"That's really not helping the pain, Ron," she said. It was obvious she was trying not to yell out in agony again. Harry held up her legs so she was completely parallel to the ground and they walked over to the stairs.
"Go faster... I don't fancy having another contraction while I'm on the move!" Hermione said. So the two boys obliged and tried to move up the stairs as carefully but as quickly as they could. But there were hazards as Harry almost fell over, Ron almost dropped Hermione out of the sheer additional weight of the baby and Hermione almost bumped her head onto the banister. Finally, they reached her and Ron's bedroom and she placed upon their bed. That proved to be an adventure in itself.
"Thank you," she said, smiling weakly at them both.
"Right, Ron, you call a doctor," Harry instructed him.
"You do it," Ron said simply. Harry sighed, realising Ron would probably want to be with his wife while in labour.
"You can squeeze my hand as much as you can," Ron informed her. "I don't even care if you crush every bone inside it... just kind of use it as a stress ball, yeah?" Hermione laughed, as much as she could under the tension and pressure in her abdomen.
"Thank you," she said.
"I love you," Ron said, as he looked into her brown eyes. He saw wetness in them, either because of what he just said or because of the pain. He stroked her hand with his thumb lovingly.
"I love you," Hermione repeated but with the same truth. She leaned in to kiss him as Ron did but before their lips met, Hermione screamed again. She was essentially screaming into his face. She fell back onto the bed. Harry entered at that point, informing them the Doctor would be arriving soon.
"Soon?" Ron shrieked, very unmanly like. "We need a bloody hospital right now!"
"Ron its okay, home births happen! It's not unusual!" Hermione managed to say. She let out another yell. Harry quickly went to her other side.
"Right, Hermione... breathe in and out. In and out. Relax yourself. If you're tense, it'll be more painful getting the baby out," Harry told her. He remembered what the Doctors were telling Ginny a little more than a year ago. "Speaking of which..."
"Ron, take off my panties," Hermione told him as she brought her knees up and moved her legs apart.
"Why?"
"THE BABY WON'T COME OUT OTHERWISE!" Hermione bellowed.
"Sorry!" Ron said. "I was just being thick! Uh..." Fortunately, Hermione was wearing a skirt so all Ron had to do was pull down the underwear. When he did he realised she had made the bed cover very wet along with her knickers. Ron caught the expression on Harry's face.
"Never thought you'd see that, did ya Harry?" Ron couldn't help saying with a grin.
"RON WHERE'S YOUR HAND?"
"Right here, love!" Ron quickly scrambled back to Hermione's side to grab her hand which she squeezed with such intensity that Ron felt he was feeling the pain Harry had when his scar had hurt before. It was obvious Harry was experiencing the same sort of pain too. Poor Harry. He probably already had enough hand-squeezing before with Ginny.
Hermione's contractions seemed to get more and more painful along with being more and more frequent. Both men continuously said words of encouragement and reassurance and the hours passed quickly. Ron cast a glance at the window outside. The curtains hadn't been closed so he could see night had definitely fallen. A crescent shaped moon bore in the sky and the stars were twinkling but Ron had no chance to admire nature's beauty as Hermione was screaming again.
"IT'S COMING!" she screeched.
"Harry, shut the curtains!" Ron said to Harry and he did almost immediately with the flick of his wand.
"Breathe in and out! Quickly! Relax Hermione relax-"
"I'VE BEEN TRYING TO BUT I'M HAVING A BLOODY BABY! WOULD YOU RELAX WHEN YOU'RE GIVING BIRTH? IT'S NOT EXACTLY A WALK IN THE PARK!" Ron had never seen Hermione shout so much before. But it wasn't like he expected her to be talking in conversational tones at a time like this. Ron left Hermione's side to look at how far the Baby was. He lifted up her skirt and looked.
Where was a midwife when you needed her?
However, Ron managed to tell what was what and whose skin was whose and said: "I can see the baby's head! Push, Hermione, PUSH!"
He saw beads of sweat appearing on her forehead as she pushed and pushed. He quickly conjured up a flannel out of thin air and began mopping up her forehead.
"Harry, could you do this for me, I need to check how far the baby's come out," Ron said with surprising leadership tones. Harry nodded and began wipe away the sweat while repeating 'breathe in and out' and 'relax!' Ron let out a gasp. A tiny head had managed to pop out of Hermione's vagina. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. A baby... they're baby was truly here... it was coming.
"Hermione, I see its head! Keep pushing, you're doing wonderfully!"
"AHHHHHHH!" she screamed again as she exerted as much push as she could. Right before Ron's own eyes, he saw the neck, the tiny shoulders, the little body... he quickly checked if its umbilical cord was strangling it and thank God it wasn't.
"You're almost there! Push!"
"WHAT DO YOU THINK I'M TRYING TO DO?"
"It's almost out Hermione, don't give up now!" Ron looked at her face over the skirt. She looked tired and worn out but he knew Hermione. She was going to do this. She never gave up on anything she started. In whatever she did, she finished what she had to do. And this time, it was no different.
"!"
With one final scream and push, the baby in its entirety came out and entered the world. And then Hermione shut her eyes and her head lolled to her side.
There was a knock on the door.
"I'll get it," Harry said. Ron had completely forgotten about the Doctor that had meant to come.
"Is that the bloody Doctor? Do Muggles have some sort of problem with punctuality?" But Harry had already left. Ron turned back to the baby. It was very pink, incredibly small and a girl... and it was theirs. Hermione's and his. He felt tears spring to his eyes, out of happiness. Finally, their baby was born after all this time. They had wanted a baby for a while and now, their wish had come true.
Hermione had either passed out or was resting. She had done brilliantly. Never once had she said 'I can't do this'. He knew she wanted the baby as much as he did. He was so proud of Hermione and knew he was going to pamper her later for all the work she had done tonight. Ron realised he had been sweating bucket loads after feeling liquid slithering down his neck and forehead. He heard two people coming up the stairs and in came the doctor and Harry. After apologising tremendously for his lateness, he quickly began to assess the baby for any injuries or serious imperfections and found none. After cutting off the umbilical cord and wrapping it in a towel for warmth, he handed it to Ron.
"You did really well," The Doctor told Ron and Harry. "Especially for two men! With all the home births I've been to ('So, none?' Ron thought spitefully) , there's usually another woman there and they don't always do it as well. Always panicking!"
Ron and Harry exchanged glances and hid their smirks.
The Doctor told them they had to go to the hospital the next day to get the baby checked out and sort out all the paperwork and soon afterwards, Ron and Harry politely (well, sort of) dismissed him so they could talk to Hermione.
"Hermione..." Ron whispered into her hair. "Don't you want to see the baby?" Hermione slowly opened her eyes. You could tell how tired she was but it didn't stop her from crying out in joy when she saw her baby for the first time.
"It's beautiful," Harry smiled as Ron propped Hermione up with pillows so she could sit up with comfort. She beamed at her newborn child cradling it in her arms. Ron wished he had a camera to capture the moment.
"She really is," Hermione whispered. She leant down and kissed it on the forehead. Ron saw her lips move in the shape of 'I love you'. There was another knock on the door.
"Oh, that must be Ginny," Harry said. "I told her that you'd just given birth, Hermione. I figure she's brought along a few other people too."
"Keep them out, will you? I think we'd like some time alone." Ron said.
"Sure thing," Harry nodded and shut the door behind him. Once he was gone, Hermione shifted along the bed to allow space for Ron to sit. He did as she wanted and snaked his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him.
"Thank you, Ron." Hermione said.
"What for?"
"For putting up with my awful screaming and for being so supportive and calm... well, sort of," Hermione laughed. "Have I broken your hand, Ron? I'm sure I have, I was holding so tight!" Ron displayed his hand.
"You broke some of my fingers," Ron grinned. "But I couldn't care less. I care more about the baby and how perfect she is... obviously got that from her mother."
"Oh Ron, I'm far from perfect..." Hermione blushed profusely.
"I hope she gets your brains," Ron said. "I have none."
"Don't be silly Ron! I hope she gets your charm and humour... but learns to use it at the right time." Hermione raised her eyebrows knowingly. Ron chuckled and then leant in to kiss her which she happily returned.
"What are we going to call her?" Ron asked when they broke apart. Hermione looked at her for a moment.
"Rose," Hermione said. She looked up at Ron to see if he agreed. "What do you think?"
"I think it's perfect," Ron smiled. "It really suits her." At this point, Ron realised Rose hadn't cried yet, up until that point.
"Aw, I don't think she likes it," Hermione said.
"Of course she does! She's just crying of happiness," Ron explained.
"Oh I see! Or perhaps she needs a wash? She hasn't had on in nine months," Hermione giggled.
"Maybe you could mend my hand first," Ron asked. "I'm starting to feel the pain." Ron handed Hermione her wand and she fixed with the muttering of 'Episkey'.
"Ah, good as new!" Ron exclaimed as Harry returned. He let out an exasperated sigh, but he had a happy demeanour.
"Ginny, Fleur and Luna say that if you don't come down with the baby in the next 5 minutes, they're going to come up here and personally drag you down."
"I'll be down soon," Hermione said. Harry was about to go off and tell them this when Hermione told him to come over. He did and sat down beside her but obviously not the same way as Ron did.
"You know," Hermione said gleefully as she swung her arms around her two best friends (/husband). "Some people would say they would prefer giving birth in a hospital with doctors. But I prefer to be with the two most important people in my life."
