A/N: I decided to make another story. This one is a two shot by the way. I decided to try my hand at humour, so it may humour some, while for the other half of the readers it won't, and that is fine since that's how life works I guess. So, on with the story!
Disclaimer: Spirited Away belongs to Hayao Miyazaki.
A two shot.
I fumbled with a small piece of paper, and every few moments I kept receiving peeved glances from my classmates from my constant groaning. Somehow, the teacher didn't notice my noise making and just kept teaching. I tapped my foot against the floor in anxiety, waiting for class to end.
I kept fumbling with the paper in my hands, and after a few clicks and taps of this and that, I heard the signal for the end of class.
Rise. Bow.
I heaved a sigh of relief and began packing. I snatched my bag and exited the classroom. I switched my shoes and left the school. There was only one person I wanted to see at the moment: Hanako, my sweet three month old baby sister.
Me, Ogino Chihiro, a thirteen year old girl, has—in my opinion, the most amazing baby sister ever. My mind was in all sorts of emotions when I heard about the news of my mom's pregnancy, but I mainly rejoiced.
When I made it in front of the house, I began to reach for the doorknob, but stopped when I heard some voices inside. I shook my head and twisted the knob.
Why did I stop? I rushed home for the sake of drowning Hanako in my attention and affection.
I shrugged and opened the door. I went upstairs and dropped my stuff. After that, I rushed to my parents' room, and saw the smiling face of Hanako. I gently lifted Hanako as if she was made of antique china, and I began to smother Hanako in butterfly kisses. I cooed, and my baby sister giggled. I settled Hanako back in her crib and turned to leave, but Hanako began to whimper.
I turned my head and assured my sister. "Don't worry Hana. I won't be away for long."
I went back downstairs to see what the commotion was about, and when I reached the living room, I saw my parents talking with one of my teachers, who somehow reached my home before me. I quickly and quietly hid behind one of the walls and decided to listen.
"She's been rather fidgety lately." I heard my teacher say.
"Well, she's been excited to see Hanako, her three month old sister." My dad said, and my mom nodded.
"Yes, yes. However, her grades have also drastically dropped, and even though she pays attention to her sister, and I'm starting to worry for Chihiro's schoolwork." My teacher reasoned.
"I see. It seems that we need to think of a reasonable punishment for her." My dad said with a rather disappointed look on his face.
"We can grant her permission for staying at school at a slightly later time for detention. How about it?" My mom suggested, and I internally groaned.
"Of course. Now that that problem has been dealt with, I thank you for letting me borrow some of your time to discuss with you. I best be going now, have a great day, and I wish you baby girl happiness and good health!" And with that, my teacher left.
I shifted for a better position, but my clumsiness has lead me to my downfall. Somehow, I tripped and landed on my chin with a loud thud. I grumbled and grasped my chin in pain. My parents turned to look at me, and my mom raised a brow.
"You've been listening? But at least we don't have to inform you. We've decided that for the next month you are to stay for detention, and what your teacher decides to do with you is up to her. Detention starts tomorrow." My mom said.
I gave a painful nod and went back to where Hanako was. I gently caressed Hana's little head and muttered, "Mom and Dad will be with you more for the next week. I'll be staying at school for a slightly longer time, so be a good girl while I'm gone, okay?"
Sometimes, Hanako can be a real pain, especially during the night. Sometimes however, she can be the remedy to all my pain. For a moment, I had actually forgotten about the Spirit World when Hanako's existence started to appear in my family life, but suddenly, right at this moment, I just remembered.
Haku, if only you can see Hanako. I'm sure you'd like her, and she would with you as well.
I doodled on my notebook, with rather messy doodles of Hanako (who in my opinion, looks like a cubby little potato) scattered around my notes and blank spaces. My teacher cleared her throat for everyone's attention, which she quickly received. I lifted my head to look at her.
"All right, class. Today we have a new student joining us. Um, please come in and introduce yourself." My teacher spoke.
I raised a brow, but I once again looked down and continued to torment my poor notebook with lazy doodles of my baby sister. I finished another messy drawing of Hanako, and began to make a small sketch of Haku. From the background, I heard the giggles and the very quiet but audible whispers and murmurs of my fellow female classmates.
"My name is Nigihayami Kohaku. I fell welcomed to be in your class, please take good care of me."
My eyes widened, and I rapidly lifted my head and focused on the boy, Kohaku, who gave a polite bow to the class. I felt tears well up in my eyes, but I quickly blinked so as to not embarrass myself to those who see me.
"I heard him say fell. Did he mean feel? Okay, okay. Maybe my mind is getting all crazy." I mumbled.
Am I imagining things? No, I don't think so. Ever since the birth of Hanako, I've been brought back to my senses and swatted away the hallucinations. But, is it really him, or is it a mere coincidence?
I felt my heart jump as his gaze landed on my shocked ones. I gulped, and my focus kept switching between the new student and my somehow accurate and detailed sketch of Haku.
"You may sit in the desk beside Chihiro, that empty one on the right." My teacher gestured toward the desk beside me.
Ha—Kohaku, began to make his way to where the empty desk was, which is pretty much right beside me. I quickly erased the sketch of Haku from my ten year old self's memory, and I didn't care whether the paper wrinkled or not—I didn't care even if it ripped, just let me not make a bigger fool of myself than I have the past three months as I kept anxiously waiting to head straight home and smother Hanako full of love! Just erase every single trace of the sketch before I embarrass myself in front of the subject's coincidentally identical doppelgänger who also coincidentally shares the same name and abnormally beautiful green eyes.
I sighed in relief as the new student sat down, and luckily, the sketch was erased, much to the chagrin of my poor wrinkled page. I decided to ignore Kohaku and his green eyes that kept glancing my way every now and then, so I focused on today's lesson. Right now, my priority is to be a good big sister to Hanako, and ogling at a new classmate you just met that coincidentally looks exactly like a boy (down to every single strand of dead straight, greenish black hair) who saved your life in an unbelievable world filled with spirits and strange creatures that only come up in fairy tales is not written in the "How to be the Best Big Sister" guide.
Now I've stamped my name right on the list of insane people again. Good job me, you did great staying as sane as possible since the birth of your dear little sister. GAME OVER! I internally sobbed, and I felt my mental self scream a big, fat "no".
I gently nipped the tip of my pencil as I pretended to focus on the lesson. From the outside, I probably might look as if I'm in thought. Reality is, my thoughts are drifting to the dark corner of my mind. As the lesson progressed, I still felt an unease and nervousness from the glances that I received that seem to only be noticed by me from the new boy beside me.
I silently packed my materials and got ready for detention. My homeroom teacher was in her desk correcting some papers. By now, everyone was either at their lockers or outside the school. My teacher lifted her head and began to speak.
"I see you've been informed of your longer stay here. Your parents informed me that you are to stay in detention for a month as punishment for the grades you've been receiving lately. I understand that you wish to take responsibility of taking care of your sister, but Chihiro, you must also pay attention to yourself." I nodded.
"Today, we'll start off small. You are to hand out the papers I have just finished correcting to the proper desks. After than, you are dismissed for the day!" My teacher finished and handed me a small stack of papers.
She packed her things and turned to leave the classroom, but quickly looked at me and said, "Even with the bad grades you've been getting the past three months, I know that you're a good girl and do not fail to accomplish a task at hand. Good luck and I bid you a great evening."
I nodded and bowed in courtesy. My teacher smiled and left the classroom.
I placed papers on desks, and by the time I finished, the sun was still shining bright enough to display a bright, blue sky. I wiped a drop of sweat and heaved a sigh. Somehow, handing out papers seem to be a workout to me. I looked at the clock.
Quarter to five.
I went to my desk and grabbed my bag. I left the classroom, switched shoes at the lockers, and left the building. I began to skip excitedly, as I absolutely cannot wait to speak to my three month old sister (Who pretty sure still isn't developed enough to understand what I'm saying, but hey, do I care? Absolutely not!).
When I made it to the front door of my house, I reached for the handle, but like yesterday, I stopped because of the audible voices behind the door. I shook my head and swiftly opened the door. By the stairs to the rooms are my parents, who were conversing—and for some reason, each had a strange expression on her face. My mother was obviously smiling about something, while my father was clearly pouting, most likely about the same thing.
"Mom, Dad, I'm home!" I called out.
My parents turned to me and my mom's grin widened.
"Chihiro, you're back! We have someone here who is waiting for you!" My mom exclaimed.
My dad continued to frown and mumbled, "Boys . . ."
I looked at him confusedly, but I asked, "So, where's this visitor?"
"Upstairs with Hanako in her playroom!" My mom happily answered.
My eyes widened.
Eh? Sorry Mom, did I hear you right? I think I did, but . . . WHY?! YOU LET A STRANGER PLAY WITH MY INNOCENT LITTLE SISTER BEFORE I DO?! No, no, no, no, NO! ABSOLUTELY NO! I shall not tolerate this!
I dropped my bag and began to leave my parents. I swiftly ran upstairs, and after a few painful trips, I reached the second floor. I tiptoed my way to the playroom and placed an ear on the closed door and listened. I was surprised to hear the sound of a giggling Hanako, and another voice that laughed alongside her. I furrowed my brow in confusion.
Whoever this person is, Hanako must really adore them. But they have the gall to entertain her before me: the caring older sister who poured her blood, sweat and tears trying to get her younger sister to love her. All that hard work, and this stranger managed to earn little Hana's affections in over an hour!
I grit my teeth, and after going through my thoughts, I swiftly the door. I decided to go for the violent and overprotective big sister route (and I didn't care whatsoever if I embarrass myself), and angrily let out, "All right, who is the person that dares to tread in dangerous waters with my dear sweet, little Hanako?!"
The person turned their head and green met brown. My eyes widened and my face took on a new shade of red as I looked at the new student, Kohaku, gently hold Hanako.
"Uh, I—" I stuttered.
Haku laughed, and my face turned redder than it already was. Wait, Haku? It's Kohaku, stupid!
"You're such a great sister, Chihiro, but I really do enjoy being with Hanako here!" Kohaku exclaimed.
I looked away in embarrassment, but it was worth it! I went into the danger zone and made an attempt to protect my sister, only my plan ended up in shambles as I realized that the stranger who earned Hana's affections seemed trustworthy enough.
"I'm sorry that I angered you, Chihiro. It's just that—it has been over three years since we have last seen each other, when we were in the Spirit World. By the end of class, I simply couldn't wait to visit you, but I wasn't aware that you had to stay at a later time to complete some tasks. And so, I waited. For the being I played with your little sister, and she was very great company." Kohaku said as he settled Hanako in the crib.
I felt lost tears return, but this time I didn't stop them from flowing.
"H-Haku. So it is you. I missed you so much!" I exclaimed and tackled Haku in a hug.
We laughed, and we made our way to the living room. My parents were talking, both of them sitting on the couch. I gestured for Haku to sit, which he did.
"I'm sorry for coming late, but would you like some tea?" I asked.
Haku politely declined, and I sat beside him. My parents focused on the two of us, and my dad's expression turned into one of suspicion.
"I'm guessing you both have questions for us. Ask away." I said nonchalantly.
"Although he has been here for over an hour already, we never bothered to ask. So, do you know this boy, Chihiro?" My mom asked.
I nodded and replied, "He's a childhood friend of mine. He transferred to my school today, and I feel very happy that we met again."
My dad just looked at Haku. "You, Kohaku, what is my daughter to you?"
"She's a very dear friend of mine, sir." Haku politely answered.
"And you are just as much to me." I fondly added.
We continued to smile at each other, and we snapped back to reality when my mom cleared her throat with a small smile on her face.
"From the way you look at each other, you two seem very close. Chihiro, you look at him like the way I did when I looked at your father when we started dating." My mom commented with a chuckle.
I felt my face grow warm.
"Mom!"
I glanced at Haku apologetically and smiled sheepishly.
"So, Kohaku, would you like to stay a bit longer and have dinner with us?" My mom asked.
Haku bowed and replied, "Thank you. I am honoured to have dinner with your family."
We began to prepare for dinner. As I was getting Hanako's milk ready, my mom stopped by me and whispered, "Isn't Kohaku such a gentleman? Is that how he really acts?"
I tilted my head, but I nodded. "Although this is the first time in a few years since we've seen each other, he's very sweet, and he hasn't changed much since the last time we spoke."
"He's a real keeper then. You don't find guys like him often. I've seen the way you look at him—get him while you still have the chance." My mom winked and continued preparing dinner, but she left me red-faced.
I'm only thirteen! Even if I were to aim for Haku, have you seen the way Dad looked at him? It was as if Haku had a million earthworms crawling in and out of him, and that Haku deserved to be in an asylum!
Dinner went by much greater than I anticipated, and Haku left soon after. Now, I lay in bed, sorting my thoughts.
I never thought that I'd get that kind of visit at such an early age. Even if Haku isn't my boyfriend, it felt as if he were being introduced as one! I scrunched my nose and groaned.
Calm Chihiro, think happy thoughts—like Hanako for example! She's always a great way to lean toward the positive! Now that I think about it, I was actually right about how Haku and Hana would like each other. . . GAH! Enough with these thoughts, just go to sleep and continue on with life! I shifted in my bed, and I prepared my mind for its production of dreams.
