The Heroes of Mobius were Legends, with Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends. They saved the world more than enough times, bringing hope wherever they went. Calling themselves the Freedom Fighters, they did indeed fight for the freedom and peace of all Mobian kind. Lead by Sonic and Princess Sally Acorn, they were a league and a kingdom of defenders of the innocent. They grew in number and strength, so much so that they had mutiple factions that scattered the globe; keeping peace and brining happiness where they went. They brought the world together, uniting the nations against evil.

The world was at peace. And that peace was passed down in time.

•••••••••••

Standing at the edge of a tall cliff that looked over the city, I gaze at Central City through hooded eyes. I am Shadow the Hedgehog, the Ultimate Lifeform, master of Chaos Control and Commanding Officer of the Freedom Fighters Global Unit. I protect the world, my home, from danger. I have saved this planet several times over and kept its peace.

But, I will never be at peace...

Beside me, also looking upon the great city was Sonic the Hedgehog. He started our league of fighters, being the leader and founder. He married Princess Sally Acorn and became king of the Knothole realm. There they forged alliances and brought more people to join the Freedom Fighters. He was also a great, wonderful friend. He was always there when you needed him. Today, he stood beside me.

"I'm starting to see why you like this place so much, faker," I used the nickname that we use on each other to poke fun at the other. "The sunrise... it makes the city come to life."

The wind blew passed us making my quills sway as I inhale the fresh air. I sigh in content.

"They expanded the city again," I explained to the hero. "They didn't cut into the forest, though. They extended into the grassland instead, to avoid falling any trees. Quite smart, really."

My eyes trace the city roads, already memorized and traveled. I recall racing with the blue speedster through this vast city. We raced almost everywhere.

"I remember that time you challenged me to a race," I felt a small smirk tug at the edges of my lip, a fond memory coming about my thoughts. "And I won because you tried to edge me to the sidewalks, only for you to run into a fruit stand." I chuckle as I muse Sonic when he slipped on an orange peel and a pineapple fell on his head, all with an avocado in his mouth.

Silence was my only response. I thought that I'd get used to this muteness, but instead I feel irritation creeping in head.

"What? You sore about losing, faker?" I jeer in ire.

Silence again.

"And here, I thought you were Mr. Always-Play-Fair and Don't-Be-A-Sore-Loser." I scoff at him.

Still no response.

"Don't have anything to say, hedgehog?" My ire was now frustration at the silent treatment. "Run out of comebacks now, have you?"

Nothing.

I turn to glare at the hedgehog. Only for my eyes to lose their light.

Beside me was the life-sized statue and grave site of Sonic the Hedgehog, 7th King of Mobius, Leader and Founder of the Freedom Fighters, True friend, Caring father, Loving husband, Keeper of Peace and the Greatest Hero of the World.

"Of course, you have... You haven't come up with anything for two- hundred-and-forty-two years."

I sigh in mild grief, already have grieved for him and the others. They are all gone. My friends have passed and left this world. But, they made me promise to continue on and lead the Freedom Fighters in their stead. I am still keeping that promise, no matter how hard it is.

I guess I'll just have to move on and continue being made of stone.
