OK – the legal bit first – not mine, ideas completely and utterly from my own head. As most of this is out of copyright, well I'm borrowing the characters to do with as I will. I hope you enjoy my offering.
Now on to the good bit. I've written this to give you an idea of the time line these characters will be traveling in. These are the stories about the central characters and what happens off camera. I've kept strictly to canon, with one small deletion.
I've recently recommenced watching "Starblazers"/"Space Battleship Yamato" with my young son. While not an expert by any means, I have discovered several feature length films and other seasons I hadn't previously seen. My stories follow this timeline –
2199 - Quest for Iscandar – occurs as in the 26 part TV series. While I do like Wildstar's siliquae as he carries an injured Nova to the bridge, this wouldn't have happened. It's much more likely to have occurred like the movie "Space Battle Ship Yamato". I did like Avatars quip about missing their wedding giving us the romantic interest and leaving most of it to our imagination.
2201 - Comet Empire – Although I do like the fact Nova got hurt rather than Wildstar and Desslok didn't give his "Yes" speech – this turning in allegiance makes more sense from "Farewell Space Battle Ship Yamato". Add to this most of the young service men perished in the Quest for Iscandar, so were on Earth did they find a new Senior Captain for Yamato and Andromeda? It makes sense Wildstar gets very quickly promoted by necessity and kept control of the Yamato. The ending of the movie – what a letdown. Delivery of Mark Venture by Trelana accompanying the Wildstar/Nova scene on the bridge make more sense to me – and allows the continuation of the series!
2202 - Yamato – The New Voyage. I've seen this twice now. What a nice filler and it works so well with my first tale in this universe – Alex's Story.
2203 – Be Forever Yamato just doesn't fit into my universe for so many reasons. I hated the kept woman scenes, Sasha growing up so fast, the death of the rest of Wildstar's family when he'd lost so much. This is just too much like a classical Japanese Opera for my liking. Pretend it never happened.
2212 – Bolar Wars – the change in cast and drawing style always make me think this occurred many years after the rest. I would have taken Desslok time to establish a new empire (in just one year as the series suggest?) and Wildstar seems much more at ease with his role as Captain and relationship with Nova making me set this in at least the year 2212.
With that out of the way – welcome to my Backlit Universe. The intention is to tell the character driven and romantic relationships we didn't see in the above timelines.
