Together
It was dark but for the gentle sliver of moon. The day's festivities and white dresses behind them, Harry and Ginny Potter lay face to face, with shallow breaths and drooped eyelids. Neither was asleep, yet neither wanted to disturb the calm.
"Harry?" Ginny whispered through the darkness, tentative.
"Yes?"
"Why did you choose me?"
Harry opened his eyes and looked at her. She was curled up, hair sprawled about on the pillow, the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. The moonlight shone on her fiery hair, and he found the question so absurd he thought he might laugh.
"Is this even a question?"
"I'm serious, Harry, why me?"
"Because you're beautiful." The words fell form his lips without thought, and more followed.
"I love your hair, how bright and shining it is. Your nose. Your freckles. Your deep brown eyes that I always fall into, especially when you're laughing and they're flecked with gold. I love our laugh, your smile...whenever you're happy, I'm happy, regardless of why; just seeing that smile is enough to brighten my day. You brighten my day. You are the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen...and you smell amazing." He grabbed the ends of her hair and took a deep sniff. "Like flowers," he murmured.
"Harry-" Ginny started, the tears in her eyes accentuated by moon beams.
"I'm not done," he interrupted, his green eyes deep and dark. The words were flowing out of him in torrents now, and he couldn't stop them if he wanted to. "The way you whisper my name and smile in your sleep. How you scrunch up your nose just slightly, almost imperceptibly, when Percy talks about work at family gatherings. They way you look while flying; so intense, so in the game. They way you won't eat cherries but gobble down asparagus. On a rainy day when you run out and dance around like a little kid.
"I love you Ginny Potter," he said her new name with a grin, "and I couldn't be happier that you chose me."
There was a beat of silence, a tear escaped down Ginny's cheek, and the newlyweds gazed into each other's eyes.
"Oh, Harry," she breathed, "you really see me like that?"
"No," he replied, and for a moment her face fell, but he continued, "it's not what I see, but what you are."
Another tear chased the first down Ginny's cheek and Harry reached up to wipe it away. No more words were needed, and Ginny snuggled into his welcoming arms. They drifted off together, hands intertwined, as their first day as a married couple ended and a life of love and happiness began for the two of them. Together.
