He came home to find her curled up on the bay window, watching the rain. Draco could tell by looking at her; the pain in her bones had been worse today. At the thought of those malignant cells that were attacking his beautiful wife, he felt so helpless. He- and the whole wizarding community- could do nothing to help her. And yet Hermione suffered through cancer as any muggle. Love and warmth and tenderness swelled in the blonde's chest as he saw her, silent tears rolling down her cheeks mirroring the drops on the window pain.

Crossing the room in a few long strides, he rubbed her shoulders and laid his cheek against the top of her head. Draco couldn't voice it, but he treasured each moment with her more, because he never knew how long her would have with her. Eventually the cancer would claim her life, and he knew he couldn't live without her.

Hermione turned in his arms, her eyes filled with tears of pain and sadness. She snuggled against her husband, the anchor in her life now. She missed being able to do as she used to these days, when the pain kept her trapped, immobile. He was her link to life before her illness, and to a world filled with more than despair. Hermione knew they only had a short time together, and the thought of leaving him to face the world alone filled her with a second, more horrible type of pain. She began sobbing into his shoulder, and Draco took her up in his arms.

Filled with such an urge to take care of his wife, Draco carried her to their bed and lay down beside her. Hermione pressed close to his body, desperate for warmth and comfort, and he held her tight. She continued to cry and tremble and he took her hand and laid it on his chest, over his heart.

"Nányë asldëm" he whispered in their private language- I am with you. She clung to him. He caressed her back as her crying faded, then slowed. She fell asleep in his arms, and he stayed there with her late into the night. When he did get up, he pulled the covers over her slender form and kissed her forhead. "Fumë mai, ninya mëlda." Sleep well, my beloved.
