Trust

by Complete Synch

Trust. A simple word. Easy to pronounce. Five letters. Two syllables. One vowel. Not a hard word to learn, even if English is not your first language, or second, or third, or even seventh. In fact she knows the word in ten different languages. Ten different pronunciations, ten different spellings, ten different variations, and yet she still cannot grasp the concept.

Trust. Even as the word rolls off her tongue she's not sure what it means. It's not as if she's not aware of the definition, she has in fact flipped open a dictionary - the one not hollowed out to hide a gun - more than once just to check it, she's even put a dog-ear on that page.

Yet as she reads the definition over and over, all it is to her are a bunch of words stringed together to make a sentence. "Assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something." Individually, they make perfect sense, but together, well, she' left scratching her head - as she believes the idiom goes.

Trust. She says it again, as if somehow saying it aloud will make her understand, but even then the word sounds foreign, even to her. It's confusing, she may occasionally slaughter - no, butcher American idioms - but the word 'trust' can hardly be considered an idiom. So why is it so hard for her to fathom what it means. Everybody else seems to have their own understanding of the word, so what is hers?

My first NCIS fanfic so tell me what you think. Constructive criticism much appreciated.
