Severus Snape took Draco back to his home, Spinner's End, where he informed Wormtail of their success. They had to leave quickly, however, because the location of Severus's house was known to several Order of the Phoenix members, who would surely tell the others, now that Severus had been revealed as a double-agent for the Dark Lord.
They went to Malfoy Manor, where Lucius (having broken out of Azkaban to rejoin Voldemort) was waiting, along with the inner circle of Death Eaters and the Dark Lord himself.
They told them the tale of Albus Dumbledore's death. Draco was punished by Voldemort for not doing it himself. Severus was treated like a hero by the other Death Eaters.
Draco's father sent him to his room, where he was told to stay until called for. It had been three days, and no one had come for him.
He lay on his bed, staring at the white ceiling, thinking. There were many rules about being a Malfoy.
Malfoys don't get scared. Malfoys never show weakness. Malfoys don't beg. Malfoys don't scream.
And above all, Malfoys don't cry.
But Draco had broken those rules during the past year.
Draco had been quite scared. He had been scared the night he got the Dark Mark. He had been scared when Voldemort told him what he was supposed to do, and what would happen if he failed. He was scared when Harry Potter had cast Sectumsempra on him. He was scared when he finally cornered Albus Dumbledore.
Draco had shown weakness as well. Draco had shown weakness when his enemy saw him have a breakdown. Draco had shown weakness when he failed to kill a defenceless Albus Dumbledore. Draco had shown weakness when he tried and failed three times to kill Albus Dumbledore.
Draco had screamed. Draco had screamed in frustration when he failed to fix the vanishing cabinet after three months in the Room of Requirement. Draco had screamed in his sleep, when he had dreams of Voldemort murdering him and his family.
Finally, Draco had cried. Draco had cried at night, in fear of Voldemort. Draco had cried in the Room of Requirement. Draco had cried when he found out what happened to Katie Bell. Draco had cried when he heard that he had almost killed Ron Weasley. Draco had cried many times over the past year, and the only one who knew was Harry Potter.
Draco had broken so many rules of being a Malfoy. He lay alone in his room, and wondered:
Am I still a Malfoy? Because Malfoys don't cry.
