Mystery
No matter how many times they saw it, the males of the academy would still gape at the sight.
The sight of Annie blushing as Armin showed some sign of affection for her. Whether it be a slight kiss on the cheek, mouth, or even nose. Or a soft caress.
Witnessing it was still one of the most unbelievable things in the world.
It was truly the greatest mystery of the Academy.
The oddest, most unexpected, and absolutely mind boggling thing in the world.
The fact that Annie Leondhart and Armin Arlert were now lovers.
Armin the one everyone knew as the Academy's brain. Smart, kind, gentle, and generally known as one of the most approachable people in the 104th. And then there was Annie, she was best described as a walking talking people repellant. She talked very little, but anyone who attempted often received only biting remarks, and a cold glare that promised pain if you annoyed her any further. The fact that she was the top in the academy at hand to hand combat didn't help matters as she could keep good on her promise.
Suddenly one day however Annie smiled and kissed Armin, and the Academy came to a complete halt.
Even Keith Shadis, the rough and hardened instructor of the 104th had paused, his mouth wide open.
Naturally the males of the Academy had sought out Armin that very night to consult him about his recent activities with a certain girl.
Connie had demanded to know how he did it.
Reiner had given Armin a hard slap on the back and wished the newest couple all the best not noticing his best friend Bertholdt Fubar's despondent look
Jean was still in denial that Armin had gotten a girlfriend before him, and that any day now Mikasa would fall head over heels for him.
Eren, had asked Armin if he was being blackmailed in any way, and even with the blonde boy's firm denial, Eren had refused to believe that they were dating for any other reason.
Marco being the nice, caring person that he was had given him a book called "Abusive Relationships: How to escape."
The sight would have been amusing if the freckled boy had not been so serious.
The rest of the night passed in the same manner, most of the males discussing amongst themselves how they could save Armin's life or possibly get Annie to confess that she was in fact blackmailing him.
They got nowhere and their only reward for their long discussion was a lack of sleep.
The relationship had evolved quickly after that fateful day, and nearly every trainee found themselves observing the much talked about new couple.
They would watch in fascination as Annie would topple Eren with ease before turning around and laying beside Armin under a nearby tree as he read.
They would stare in awe as Armin calmed down a raging Annie after a lost to Mikasa only with a kind smile and a warm loving hug.
They would gawk as he kissed her firmly on the lips and Annie would squirm and fidget like a schoolgirl.
The males of the academy had learned over time, that they would never figure out the mystery of how the couple got together, or why they stayed together, or even what they saw in each other that somehow managed to form such a strong and loving relationship.
"But maybe that is what makes it special," Mikasa had told them one day, finally fed up at their constant criticism of her friend's relationship. "The fact that they know something about the other that no one else does, something that only the two of them share..."
Eren had only blinked at her,
"I still say blackmail..."
The other males crossed their arms and nodded sagely and Mikasa resisted the urge to facepalm.
