Severus Snape sat at his
desk, watching his students brew their potions
and idly twirling his wand
in his hand. There was little more than ten minutes
left to the class, and he couldn't
wait until class was over. He needed to get out
of the dungeons, out of the
castle. He needed air.
I wish Potter and his
stupid little sidekicks would stop glaring at me, he thought
silently to himself.
I really don't like them. They're such ass-kissers around
Dumbledore, especially Granger.
Little know-it-all brat. She really thinks I'm so
ignorant that I don't know
it was her who stole supplies from me her second year.
He sighed. Ten
minutes - only ten more minutes and I won't have to put up
with this group of dunderheads
'til next Thursday. Hopefully class will end before
Longbottom gets a chance
to screw up his potion, or melt the cauldron, or blow up the
dungeons, killing us all.
Time moves so slowly . . .
Snape glanced around the
classroom. That idiot Draco Malfoy was
making Crabbe and Goyle do
all the work - again. One of these days I'll give the
spoiled little creature
detention - maybe even take some points away from him. A
snickering noise floated to
his ears, and he turned his attention back to Potter,
Weasley, and Granger.
They were whispering about something, and Snape
frowned.
Potter knows, he thought.
As do Granger and Weasley. They know all about
the mark on my forearm,
all about the stupidity of my earlier years. No doubt the rest of
the school knows as well.
A voice sounded in the
back of Snape's head, and he unconsciously
gripped his arm. "Severus,
you idiot, you'll be paying through your nose for
those mistakes. For the
rest of your life," it said. "But . . . what do you care?
People already look down on
you. What difference would it make if everyone
knew?"
I would be shunned,
Snape answered softly. At least now I get respect - once
in a while. But if
everyone knew - if the world knew - I'd be living in ditches and
praying for my life . .
.
"You already pray for
your life, Severus," the voice shot back nastily.
"You could die at any time,
all because you were a superficial young fool and
allowed yourself to be persuaded
to join his side. The Dark Side. Demise could
come to you at any moment,
any hour of the day. You could die within the next
minute, you jack-ass."
Snape shook his head,
trying to get rid of the voice. "I know that," he
said as the bell rang and the
students began filing out of the classroom. "I know
that." He received a
few odd looks.
As the last student left
the room, Snape slowly stood, steadying himself.
"Finally," he whispered.
"Finally, class is over."
"And if Voldemort discovers
your loyalties lie with Dumbledore," the
phantom voice taunted," the
same may go for your life."
