"Jack?"

He cringed at the sound of her voice interrupting his quiet reverie on the bridge of the Black Pearl. He could hear her footsteps coming closer to the helm. He leaned behind him and secured the wheel with a piece of rope – though he didn't really know why, it wasn't like the ship could go anywhere in the godforsaken waters of Davy Jones' Locker.

"Jack?" He heard her again as he moved to the rail to look down on the quarter deck where his crew were aimlessly wandering around.

Even though he'd been thinking about her, he really didn't want to talk to her.

He heard her sigh before he put his hands over his ears in a last attempt to block her out. He heard her voice, muffled though it was, and started humming loudly to himself.

He felt her hand on his shoulder and he broke into a rendition of "la-la-la" that was loud enough to draw the attention of his idle crew.

He didn't care.

He saw her try to move into his line of vision and he closed his eyes tight. He really, really didn't want to talk to her because, if he did, he was pretty sure he would dice her up into tiny little pieces and feed her to the dolphins that sometimes graced the bow of the ship.

And that was something he didn't really want to do.

He felt her cool fingers wrap around his wrist and he fought against her. He could only imagine the sigh that preceded her giving up.

He sensed her figure retreating and removed his hands from his ears just in time to hear her venomous,

"You're being childish, Jack."

He sneered and stuck his tongue out at her back as she descended the steps to the quarter deck. He watched her until she disappeared below deck and even then he kept his eyes on the hatch she'd disappeared through.

He cleared his throat as he turned to the wheel only to find Mr Gibbs already there with a knowing smirk on his face and an eyebrow raised high.

"What?" Jack growled and bared his teeth.

Gibbs simply smiled and shook his head. Jack growled again and bundled a chuckling Gibbs from the wheel, refusing to look the older man in the eye as he barked orders at him.

Sometimes, Gibbs thought more than perhaps he should.
