A small, eleven year old Remus was sitting alone in a compartment, looking out the window at the blurred trees. He was worried about what others would think about him. Would his classmates get along with him, or would they shun him, like the rest of the Wizarding World, when they found out that he was a werewolf? He was still thinking about that when he suddenly heard a knock on the compartment door. Remus looked towards the sound and saw a tall, skinny boy with long, black, wavy hair smiling down at him. "Mind if we join you?" the boy asked through the glass, gesturing towards a smaller boy with glasses and very unruly black hair.
"Umm, sure. You can come in." Remus said a bit hesitantly. He wasn't used to people other than his family being nice to him, and actually talking to him.
"I'm Sirius. Sirius Black." spoke the taller of the two. "And this is James Potter, a close friend of mine." James and Sirius shook hands with Remus, who was beginning to relax. He thought that these two boys seemed nice, especially this Sirius character.
"Hi, I'm Remus Lupin. Are you both first years?" Remus asked curiously.
Sirius smiled at him. "You bet we are. I'm hoping to land in Gryffindor. My whole family has been in Slytherin for generations, and I'm out to prove them wrong."
"I'm with Sirius on this. I know the hat will put me in Gryffindor…at least I hope it will." James seemed to lose a little bit of confidence.
"I'm sure the hat will take your thoughts into consideration." Remus said to James. "I'm hoping to be in either Ravenclaw or Gryffindor…either will do for me.
"Well, as long as you're not in Slytherin, we'll still talk to you!" Sirius said with a playful grin. "Í really hope you're in Gryffindor though. We could have so much fun, the three of us."
"So, you said that your whole family has been in Slytherin? Why don't you want to follow in their footsteps?" Remus asked Sirius.
James and Sirius both laughed. "Because my whole family is a bunch of nutters." Sirius explained to Remus "That's why. They are fascinated by the Dark Arts, and I just don't go for that stuff. It creeps me out. But if I get fed up by what my parents are drilling into my brother's head, I just go to James house. His mom loves me."
"Mhm, sure she does, Siri. Just keep telling yourself that." James said jokingly. "I'm just fooling with ya. She says that you're always welcome in our house, anytime."
"That's what I thought!" yelled Sirius.
James, Sirius, and Remus continued their conversation for a good hour before the Trolley came rolling up the aisle. "Anything from the Trolley, dears?" asked the candy lady. James and Remus shook their heads and Sirius said "No, thank you!" and closed the cabin door.
By the time the Hogwarts Express rattled into Hogsmeade Station, the boys had become very good friends. Each of them was hoping that they would all be in Gryffindor, so the friendship would continue. Even Remus was excited at the prospect of having friends…even if he would have to abandon them once every month. He was finally happy.
One by one, the names of that years first years were called out. Sirius, James and Remus were all sorted into Gryffindor. As the feast began, Remus thought to himself, "This is going to be one of the best years ever."
