Warmth filled the air, giving the day a pleasant dazy feel that made one feel lazy enough to plop right down in the thick grassy fields and meadows packed to the brink with sweet-smelling flowers. Trees hunched over, stretching their wiry branches to give shade to the flowers and the bees that bounced from one to the other.
In a particularly thick patch of grass surrounded by flowers and shielded from the blazing sun with a perfect amount of shade slept a tiny little pokémon, snoring lightly as it enjoyed its peaceful slumber. Not a care in the world was given by the gentle, slightly drooling pokémon as the day went past at a snail-like pace. Or so it seemed. Everything appeared to stand still in time, even the trees, that only gently waved in the occasional heavy, warm breeze.
So when a giggling young girl stumbled out of the brush and into the meadow, the peace was broken. Her eyes widened as they took in the wonderful view before them. A gasp was all that happened otherwise in the minutes to follow.
Then, just as the tiny, red-headed girl was beginning to regain her senses, a small pokémon with brown fur and a bushy tail skittered out into the open. With wide eyes ringed with black it surveyed the environment. The little girl squealed and proceeded to stumble through the tall grass that brushed at her elbows toward it.
"Zig zig!" she called, not knowing the racoon-like pokémon by any other name.
The Zigzagoon looked up in alarm. Upon sighting her, racing toward it with haste, it scampered off down the hill. The little girl continued to pursue it. After just a few moments the girl had lost sight of it and tumbled to the ground with a few lighthearted giggles.
Then the grass shifted to her left and she stopped giggling immediately, the glee overtaken by curiosity. Quickly she lifted herself upright, carefully keeping sight of where the movement had been, and made her way toward it with less haste than she had with the Zigzagoon.
Not a moment did it take before the movement occurred again, and then she had just been only a few paces away from it. She took larger steps, panting slightly as she did. Then, with a gasp, she saw a patch of yellow in the green.
It was a snoozing togepi! The girl couldn't believe it. Her mother told stories of the pokémon, who wore shells and held happiness in their hearts. Only a friendship as bold as bronze could have the pokémon evolve, which fascinated her. One thing her mother told her over and over again was that happiness would come to anyone who could rouse a sleeping togepi.
So she went for the direct approach. "Hey, wake up!" she shouted boldly. The togepi continued to snore lightly.
The little girl scowled and stomped her foot stubbornly. "Wake up!" she demanded louder. Still the pokémon snoozed.
She took a moment to consider any and all options left. Snores were still heard from the togepi. Finally an idea worthy of consideration occurred to her and a broad smile broke across her face. Without hesitation the girl outstretched her hand and tickled the tiny pokémon right under its tiny little arm.
In a snap the togepi's eyes opened and it roles over, away from her reach. It kept rolling around in a circle until finally getting to its feet. As it locked eyes with her, she felt a surge of undeniable happiness.
"Togepi?"
