Summary: Just the one more moment that we were all hoping for

"This is the end of my journey." Kara said and her voice is carried away on this new wind. I hear her but the words don't register. My focus is on the far distant mountains. I look over to see her standing, eyes closed, absorbing the sunshine. When I move to her and block the light she opens those familiar eyes. I pull her close.

"Are you sure?" I touch my lips to hers carefully. I don't want to spoil this moment. She is sweet and warm. I feel her smile against me but her body pulls away.

"Lee," she interrupts, "I can't stay. This world is not for me."

"What do you mean? Where else but here is for you?" Where else but with me, I wonder.

"I don't know. I just can't stay here." Kara replies and ducks her head. She feels solid against my fingers but I know somehow that she's slipping away.

"Can't you stay a little while longer?"

"No, I can't."

"Just today then."

"Lee" her voice pleads.

"An hour." It's almost like she's transparent.

"A moment. Just a moment."

"A moment," she agrees. In that moment, I see the rush of our past. Every touch instantly revisited then gone. The future of what could have been or would have been is blindingly clear. I ignore it all in favor of burning this into my memory. The texture of her hair, the smell of her skin, the taste of my tears on her lips. I must remember this. I know when I open my eyes she'll be gone.

And she is.
