Drowning

He's drowning

in a sea of people.

Well... Not exactly.

He's drowning,

that much is true,

but not in a sea of people

per se.

He's drowning

in a sea

of legs and arms

of blood and bowels

of lips and eyes.

He's drowning

in the eyes,

in what they show.

The agony,

the pain,

and worst of all

the trust.

He's drowning

in the trust

of the soldiers

when they hear

he's a doctor.

He's drowning

in the loss

of every man,

no, boy,

they're only boys,

that he couldn't save.

He's drowning

in the uselessness.

The ones he save

get sent back

only to be killed

in the end.

He's been drowning

for over a year now.

Then

he shakes hands

with the new arrival

and

he can breathe.
