A/N: This PT fic is SO long overdue. It's about Ruu's thoughts on loneliness before she turns into Claire...enjoy!xD

But He Will Never be There

Oneshot

Her steps were uncertain. Her direction veered often from the straight course. She trekked the dimly lit corridors of the Golden Crown Academy like one crazed. It seemed to a viewing outsider that the poor girl did not know where she was headed.

Hot wax from the pathetic stub of a candlestick she held burned her delicate fingers, but she did not feel pain. Its weakening light illuminated dull crimson eyes, weary with endless nights of crying and torment. Abundant ebony hair lay lank about her face. Full, red lips were slightly parted to permit a soft humming to escape. The tone was eerie and sad. Its notes can be played on the Penguin's piano...

Oh if the gods only knew how much she had sacrificed to win him. She had suffered to save his life. She had clung to him as a child and had fallen into love's raging river. Her hope sprang eternal but fate denied her so cruelly of her dreams.

All she wanted was his love.

Ruu had asked for help. She became desperate and was once more prepared to risk all for that small satisfaction.

Her steps hastened; she stumbled more. Her candle fell from trembling hands and her way was plunged in darkness. It did not matter for her fingertips became her eyes in her frantic search for the classroom her mysterious aid rented.

She became hysterical. Her mind reeled. Before her flashed the moments she had spent with her beloved Myuuto. Her life was as a ribbon, rosy at first...then black...very black with specks of blood. She saw times when the wretch Princess Tutu won the prince's charm, and in each remembered incident, a tear fell from her eyes.

Ruu slowed down as she approached the door at the end of the corridor. Her body was shaking terribly and her palms were dirty and bruised.

In that moment, she had refused to lose hope, but she could no longer disillusion herself.

The humming stopped. She stood before the door and laid her hands on the smooth, cool wood, preparing to open it.

Realization hit her like a speeding bullet toward the heart. The wound bled. She was crying uncontrollably.

But he will never be there...

She screamed and screamed and screamed. In her voice she poured out all her remorse, tribulations and frustrations. In her voice she told the ears in the walls of all her life...her devotion...her defeat.

The poor girl fell forward and beheld the interior of the room with tear-glazed eyes.

The place was decorated with the desires of the soul. Temptations were on all sides and a looming shadow hung like a huge, ominous canopy, overseeing all.

Despite the apparent emptiness, she spoke...or tried to. The sound was no more than a whisper.

"Who...who are you?"

A voice, rich and deep, answered from the gloom. "Come...my child."

Those words settled like false solace on her troubled being. Her joy was incomparable.

"Father!"

The door closed behind Ruu, and when Claire came out...it was too late.
