Sam and Dean stood in the middle of a forest next to a pit, a deep, dank, sulfuric-smelling pit. Dean shook his head. "How far down do you think it goes?"
Sam shrugged nervously. "I dunno. Looks like it goes on forever."
"Yeah, that's what I thought too," replied Dean as he slipped into his harness. "We're sure it's down there?"
"Sure as I can be given the evidence we have."
"Well then," Dean clapped his hands together. "Let's get to this." He knelt, carefully dropping over the edge of the hole. "I'll pull three times on the rope for you to get me out."
Sam nodded and slowly began releasing the rope, lowering Dean into the pit. The rope unspooled at a steady rate before abruptly stopping with a jerk.
Suddenly there came a series of high, sharp screams. Sam tensed. The rope went still. He waited a minute but the rope remained still. Anxiety slammed into his chest.
He leaned over the pit. "DEAN! DEAN!"
Silence.
"No-no-no-no..." Sam's hands tightened on the rope, readying to haul upward. Then finally, there came the three hard tugs on the rope. Sam pulled upward with all his might, muscles straining to lift his brother to safety.
Dean's bloodied countenance popped above the rim, and Sam helped him up and out.
"Dean? You okay? I see a lot of blood."
Dean offered up a gory grin. "Not mine, Sam. Not mine."
On closer inspection, Sam realized the blood was tinged the wrong color. He breathed a deep sigh of relief. "You got it."
"'course I did."
Dean slipped out of his harness and made to stand, only to waver and sink to his knees. "Uhh...yeah, it may..." Dean swallowed hard. "It may have got me too."
