They Left It

The bullets ricocheted one after the other. People were scrambling for cover, grabbing for their helmets, not to mention each other.
The sniper had been there for hours. Most of the camp was pinned down in the post op ward. A few others were still out in the compound.
"How we gonna get them in here?" Henry yelled over the commotion.
"That's not our job Henry; we gotta get the wounded patched." Hawkeye hollered back, starting his way through the over populated area.
Two more shots rang out, followed by a scream.
"That's a scream of pain if I've ever heard one." Trapper added, racing to the doors window.
"It's Nurse Benning, looks like she's hit in the leg."
He and Hawkeye started through the door when Captain Spaulding raced out of his tent towards her. He knelt down and lifted her up running as fast as he could towards post op handing her into Trappers arm. Just as he did, two more shots rang out, causing the Captain to fall into Hawkeye's arms, motionless.
"Damnit" Hawkeye responded turning him over in his arms and laying him on the floor. Touching his neck, then wrist for a pulse. He found none. The bullets had ripped through his back and heart. "Damn damn damn." He shook his head, using his fingers to close the Captains eyes.
"Klinger! Get me a stretcher for Spaulding...get him covered up; take care of all the details will ya?"
Just as he finished his order he followed close behind Trapper to assist with the wounded.
Hours passed slowly. Some were mourning, others frightened. It wasn't until dawn before the Sniper was taken out.
And it seemed like minutes; before Trapper and Hawkeye found themselves sitting by the still, numb to everything around them.
Radar appeared through the doors, holding Spaulding's guitar in his hand.
"They left it..." He set it down between the two doctors.
Trapper picked it up and strummed a few chords.
"Oh when I die...and it won't be long...you're gonna be sorry that you treated me wrong...yes you're gonna be sorry that you treated me bad..." Trapper sang quietly
Then the three men in unison followed...
"And if there's an after life...I'll go and I'll be glad..."
- THE END
See Episode: There is nothing like a Nurse – Season 2. For understanding of lyrics.
AN: Captain Spaulding was the guy with the guitar in some episodes in the earlier seasons. I don't remember seeing where he went to, so I thought I'd write one up.
