It was a clear night with a slight, cool breeze in the air. Garnet and Pearl were asleep inside their rooms in the Gem Hideout. Amethyst and Steven, the other two Gems, were sitting on the roof of the Gem Hideout. Amethyst just sat silently and looked around, thinking about beautiful the night was. Her mind wandered, and Amethyst thought about if the Gems, especially Steven, would ever be ready when the final battle came to be, and felt nervous. Shaking off the feeling, Amethyst sat closer to the brown-haired boy next to her, wrapping her arm around his midriff. Steven took notice of this, and wondered why Amethyst did what she did, but didn't seem to care. Steven adjusted his own body just a little to accommodate her, wrapping his arm around the girl in the process. Though he wouldn't admit it out loud, Steven had taken a liking to Amethyst and her unusual charm. It also helped that the Gem girl was cute. Smiling at her, Steven pulled Amethyst in closer and looked at waterfall in the distance. Amethyst, breaking the silence, piped up and asked, "Hey, Steven, have you ever thought about going out with any girls you liked?" Steven looked at the girl, who was looking at him with questioning eyes. He wasn't quite sure how to respond, seeing how out of the blue the question was, but he responded anyway. "To tell you the truth I haven't thought about it. I guess I'm not looking for it, yet," Steven responded. Amethyst looked down, with a look of mild disappointment on her face. "That's ok… I guess. I didn't know you weren't looking for anyone yet." "Why would you even need to know that, anyway?" inquired Steven. Amethyst blushed and, while still looking down, not making eye contact, stayed silent. "Well?" asked Steven. "It was… to settle my own curiosity, I guess." Amethyst's response perplexed the brown-haired boy. "What could you possibly be thinking about that would make you ask a question like that?" And then Steven suddenly realized exactly what would make someone ask a question like that. "I… I sort of…" The rest of what Amethyst said was muffled because she had buried her head in her free arm out of embarrassment. "What did you say? I didn't catch that last part." "I said," Amethyst replied, lifting her head up a bit, "that I… like you… a lot." Steven was surprised at the green-haired girl's confession. He thought she wouldn't return his affection. "Well, speaking honestly, I… like you too." Now it was Amethyst's turn to be surprised. She looked up, her purple eyes meeting with Steven's brown ones. "Do you really mean that?" Amethyst asked. Steven gently smiled at the girl and responded with a simple, but sincere, "Yes." Amethyst's eyes lit up with joy as she sat up. The white-haired girl leaned her face towards the brown-haired boy rather shyly. Blushing was quite evident on both their faces. Finally, Amethyst's soft mouth met with Steven's, giving him a kiss, sweet as sugar, gentle as a butterfly. Amethyst and Steven broke apart, then with into Steven's room and curled up against each on the bed, falling asleep on the peaceful night.
